Iv'e been reading everyones thoughts on the Hilux conversion and it seems to be the way to go, I already have a pair of R33 discs and calipers (not on car yet) but I also have 240k 270mm disc struts with new koni's and rebuilt calipers. I was going to go to the expense of getting custom caliper mounts made to fit the R33 brakes until I came across the Hilux conversion which seems reasonably straight forward. Is there and significant braking difference in running R33 brakes over the Hilux brakes??

No. But the Hilux caliper is cast iron & weights considerably more than the R33 alum caliper.

I thought I read somewhere that some of the later model Hilux's had a alloy caliper??

i used hilux, havent used them yet, so cant comment, but i imagine the braking capacity of either will outdo the car and traction available in most situations.
if someone can find an alloy one i'd like to know what model its off.
and although the hilux are heavy, its unsprung weight, so unless its a flatout race car, it doesnt really matter much.

Can anyone confirm... 00 Model Prado's have calipers on em stamped with s13, whereas Hilux calipers and 70 series cruisers have the S12w stamped on em... which ones are you meant to use? I have read s13 ones are the go, but these would be heavier than the s12 ones.

s12 are solid rotors
s13 are vented rotors
s13 that i and most people refer to as the hilux conversion, are from early-mid 90's model hilux, vzn130 i think.
are made of iron. heavy.

s12's are used on 240z's and some 200b's i think, as they bolt straight on, using the factory datto solid rotor

Or you could have a look at this conversion. They are still cast but no as heavy. http://www.ozdat.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... 42&start=0

the bmw ones looks good but a very small pad, and what type of aftermarket pads are out there?

Really you cant go past 300zx z32 turbo calipers, rotors are dirt cheap, you can buy race pads at the milk bar
everything is cheap cheap.

R33 is a waste, costly caliper, stupidly costly rotor replacement as well

These guys sell race pads for nearly anything. They keep Hilux pads in stock in race compound (and no doubt street compounds as well). Worst case, you send them existind pads and they will refurb them with whatever compound you want. And they are cheaper than buying from Race Brakes in Melbourne. So I think pad choice is a non issue.

For a street car I don't think you'll have to worry about anything bigger or better than 4 spot hilux calipers.

If you already have the struts with those inserts, makes sense to use them.

Some info here might help -> http://www.datfusion.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=39

Pads for the ATE BMW's would be 30-40% larger than the 240K pads and the pads cover the whole swept diameter of the rotor.
As far as pads go the following rides share the same pad

Ferrari 412i and Testarossa, Maserati 425i Biturbo, Alfa Romeo 6 (2.5) and selected BMW 2002, 2500, 2600, 2800, 630CS, 633CSi and '80-'81 M5 and other 7 series makes

I did a bit of searching just on the net. Pagid pads, EBC, Race brakes and QFM pads are avalible for the calpiers. Plenty of selecion. I will stick with the RB74's as I have comp 2's in the rear but would like to try some Pagid RS4-2 or RS4-4 pads next. Anyone used the RS4-2? I have only heard stuff online. Cheers

No, I don't think that's right. The S12 is for 20mm hilux vented rotor, and the S13 is for 24mm rotor (suits the Verada conversion).

I know there is also a solid rotor caliper, but I'm not sure what its nomenclature is (def not S12)

I know because I had a set of S12's (and was wondering why everyone kept raving about the S13's being the one to have. I eventually put it down to internet hype - the S12's are still a good caliper, and can be used with a vented rotor.)

To answer the other questions, an alloy caliper will be lighter and give you less unpsrung mass, but 99% of people woulr never pick it. Even a lot of high level RWD rally cars use landcruiser or Hilux calipers, and I haven't heard too many of them complain about the calipers being too heavy.

Being 4WD calipers, there are plenty of good pads available. Remember, hard core off roaders do sillier things than we do, even when we're belting around a race track, so they need to have good brakes to survive the torture. You'll be doing well to over power a well set up hilux brake combo.

There are 2 types of the S12 hilux caliper, 1 to suit vented, 1 to suit solid.

"s13wm" 95 series Prado 130mm bolt spacing,
"s12wmaa" 03-present Hilux (vented) 90mm bolt spacing,
"s12+14a" 100 series Landcruise (V8 not sure about others) 130mm bolt spacing.
I have spent the last week searching about 150 hiluxes, surfs, 4runners, landcruisers and prado's and the above is all i came up with. The only toyota calipers suitable for the verada discs (aprox 24 mm thicknes) are the s13's listed above, but they have the 130mm bolt spacing which is not suitable to datsun struts. Now im definately not saying they are the only ones because i know people with this conversion, but thats all i could find. Both s12 (solid) and s12w (vented) calipers use aprox 10-12mm discs, not suitable.

I am at a loss now... i really need to go to melbs and check out my mates setup, otherwise i just dunno.
