Being turbo, check the motor condition, as R32's are getting to be 20 years old now, so an engine compression test is a good start, check turbo shaft play, mods are done properly, check all suspension bushes (20years old remember!) shock condition, LSD condition, service history, obviously all the usual checks, but RB20DET's are getting long in the tooth, so any checkups to determine it's health are worth doing

Yer under powered 6 piston motor is sik.

S chassis cars have a heap of problems and have spent their lifes being smashed around.
so check for chassis and body damage.
esp if its got a kit,

Best bet is to get it checked by a reputable workshop that specialises in Nissans, or a full RAC check, only way to be sure with a car of that age if you don't know the seller especially, some dodgy dude's out there.

Or just buy my DR dude ;) Qucker than all but a very serious R32

Cheers fellas...

No vaughn i'd like to actually get into my car and not fry my mums front lawn every time i take off... Thanks for the offer though lol... i was thinking the RAC check myself

Im after something that has minimal mods (dreamin) good reliable engine and tidy..

Probably spend up to 12K

What is this R and S chassis you guys are talking about..

As much as id love the Rb25 in R32 package, id rather have things as stock as possible as the only thing that a engine conversion says to me is that the car gets the sh*t thrashed out of it...

Anyhow, going from the 1.2L barina to the RB20det is a pretty big step and it should keep me entertained until i sell/upgrade in 2 years...

So common and all trashed, way before they land here. They dont give a sh*t about them over in japan. Why you think you can buy full kit, drift spec 180sx's for under $1500aud.
some stockers will be lucky to go for a few 00aud
They are like taxi's here

spandex have you imported many cars?
im very happy with all my silvia's 180's and the latest one a 97 type x with 90,000km on the clock looks and drives like new

silvia's 180sx skylines( not the gtr) are brought buy normal people over there , yep there your run of the mill car , and clock up there kms nicly, some do get in the hands of street drifter but it shows

where over hear a wrx or ss xr8 has been brought buy someone that wanted the power and most wrx once they hit 70,000 + are pretty worn out

end of the day i find that high grade cars from japan are really good

Graham,

I would suggest getting the R32, but as previously suggested, make sure you get a compression test done. Also check the condition of the cams. If I were you, id make sure you get a low K' car, and hopefully make sure it has service history. Usually if the car has service history, most (I said most) of the time, the small things that turn into big things get replaced. (Loose bushes ball joints etc.)
Definitely get the car checked before you buy. It might cost you an extra $300 for the checks (depending where you get it done), but it gives you an idea of what's wrong, and potentially saves you thousands later.
The thing with the RB20's is making sure they have had their timing belt replaced at about 100K, and water pump replaced. I can't remember when the recommended replacement for the oil pump is, but keep an eye on oil pressure, and ask what sort of oil they are running (10W-40 is approximately right)
Make sure you inspect for oil leaks. (engine, gearbox, turbo, diff)
When taking the car for a drive, check braking noises, acceleration noises when cold and hot. also check any play in the rack when the car is stationary.
Obviously you can pick whether a car has been tracked. Check sills for damage (ripple strip impacts) and underneath the car.
I'm always sceptical of new parts on RB motors. Either the owner wanted more performance, so it's justified, or the owner was replacing something that was worn out. Be carefull on what was replaced as if these components were driven to failure, there could be other problems further down the track. (such as turbo's with oil seals on the way out, sending oil into the induction system, which in turn causes the car to ping, causing piston damage etc.)

If your budget is 12K, I would HIGHLY recommend getting something newer, such as a Stagea with the RB25DET and auto. You can pick up a 2000 model station wagon with "tip-tronic" auto for around 12K with around 80K on the clock. Practically brand new. That's only if the fancy takes you in that direction.

Another one that I recommend is getting the old skylines such as the DR30 or the HR31. Most of these are getting very long in the tooth, but most owners these days are spending the money to keep them in good condition (I know I am -damn it) Be known that most of these cars do require work. Doesn't matter what the owner says. These things are easy to find though by inspection.

You could get a datsun 1600 and put an FJ in it??? -HAHAHhahahahah That would be the best IMHO :D

Really appreciate the feedback nick and perthute...

Alot to keep in mind .. :D i know i should be going for the newer skyline, but to me its like choosing the 1600 over the stanza..(no disrespect to stanza owners )

I have always love the shape of the R32... i have been keeping my eyes on the SAU forums and i have seen some very clean cut examples.. only problem is they have 5 pages dedicated to mods :(

Had a quick look at some japenese import sites.. there are 60K 32's going for $4500... Seems pretty tempting to go down that path although at the same time unfamiliar..

In terms with the engine side of things i would definately have it checked over by a pro, but apart from RAC inspections, can you tell an owner to just go to a shop of your choise to have there car inspected??

Perthute... Are you able to PM me like a quick summary of the idea of the costs of importing such a car from japan..

Cheers guys
