Graham,
I would suggest getting the R32, but as previously suggested, make sure you get a compression test done. Also check the condition of the cams. If I were you, id make sure you get a low K' car, and hopefully make sure it has service history. Usually if the car has service history, most (I said most) of the time, the small things that turn into big things get replaced. (Loose bushes ball joints etc.)
Definitely get the car checked before you buy. It might cost you an extra $300 for the checks (depending where you get it done), but it gives you an idea of what's wrong, and potentially saves you thousands later.
The thing with the RB20's is making sure they have had their timing belt replaced at about 100K, and water pump replaced. I can't remember when the recommended replacement for the oil pump is, but keep an eye on oil pressure, and ask what sort of oil they are running (10W-40 is approximately right)
Make sure you inspect for oil leaks. (engine, gearbox, turbo, diff)
When taking the car for a drive, check braking noises, acceleration noises when cold and hot. also check any play in the rack when the car is stationary.
Obviously you can pick whether a car has been tracked. Check sills for damage (ripple strip impacts) and underneath the car.
I'm always sceptical of new parts on RB motors. Either the owner wanted more performance, so it's justified, or the owner was replacing something that was worn out. Be carefull on what was replaced as if these components were driven to failure, there could be other problems further down the track. (such as turbo's with oil seals on the way out, sending oil into the induction system, which in turn causes the car to ping, causing piston damage etc.)
If your budget is 12K, I would HIGHLY recommend getting something newer, such as a Stagea with the RB25DET and auto. You can pick up a 2000 model station wagon with "tip-tronic" auto for around 12K with around 80K on the clock. Practically brand new. That's only if the fancy takes you in that direction.
Another one that I recommend is getting the old skylines such as the DR30 or the HR31. Most of these are getting very long in the tooth, but most owners these days are spending the money to keep them in good condition (I know I am -damn it) Be known that most of these cars do require work. Doesn't matter what the owner says. These things are easy to find though by inspection.
You could get a datsun 1600 and put an FJ in it??? -HAHAHhahahahah That would be the best IMHO
