Hello all..
I was wondering what newer nissan boxes will fit into my sr20det 1600.. ive heard 5 speeds are stronger but im not planning on going over 300hp or thrashing it too much.. here are my thoughts..

S15 6 speed . i know this fits
Z33 6 speed
Z34 6 speed

I have standard manual trans tunnel not supposedly larger auto tunnel

Thanks

Supposedly with an adapter you can fit the stronger and heavier RB25 box (similar to the Z33).
If you are running under 300hp, the factory S14 5 speed has more than enough strength to cope with it. Just run the correct oil, maybe freshen it up a little with bearings etc.

From peeking under my brother's 350Z, the Z33 is a big, fat lump of a thing. I can't see it even going close to fitting a 1600 without a lot of mods.

I have an S15 6 speed in my 1600 (behind an L18), it fits quite well. I had to enlarge the shifter hole in the transmission tunnel (moving it backwards a little).

S15 gears are thinner than s14 gears, to make them all fit into required length.
Some have found, with a bit more power than normal, the S15 6 speeds are not as strong. F driven hard/abused.

thanks for all your advice.. i was definitely hoping for a 6 speed but as most things arent going to plan so may well go over 300hp so strength is important..
prob just get a reconditioned box and go from there..

thanks again

Rb25det is the way to go. Its a very common upgrade on sr20's now. I am going to run a rb25det gearbox on my sr, you will need a adapter plate they range from 500-800 dollars and you will need a new custom gearbox crossmember. Ive bought a adapter plate for mine but have yet to buy a gearbox they are pretty pricey 1000-2000. With all the gearboxes you have mentioned you will need to modify the gearbox tunnel to some degree.

Cheers,

Richard

When running an rb25 box it requires a full custom tunnel

That isn't true, you can make it fit by massaging the tunnel and making a few cuts to allow for a couple of the sensors that stick out the side, and obviously some sectioning around where the shifter mechanism goes into.

My mate put one behind his fj20 and I had my head under there, they actually aren't as big as most people make out.

Are you sure it was a rb25 box and not a rb20???

RB25. He upgraded from an RB20 box after it finally died in the harbour tunnel of all places.
