Spotted this 280Z at Phillip Island on the weekend. Had a chat to the owner and he said it's the only one in Australia.
It was imported from the US and he managed to save about 90kg by removing the US-spec bumpers!
Those US spec bumpers may be heavy but then again i pushed a 1984 cutlass supreme across the coronado bay bridge with my Z when he broke down and i did zero damage
I also rope towed several buddies with a rope and the rear bumper, and also pulled a jeep off the beach ( i was on asphalt and had a long chain) again not a scratch on that bumper lol
Also, it wasnt just the bumpers thAt made a US spec 280z a porker. The doors on mine had thick side impact beams, it came standard with the R200 rear as well. Also, it had the l-jetronic EFI and frame was reinforced to cope with those massive ugly bumpers. With all that and factory AC my 280 was flirting with 1400kg...which is why the bumpers were so massive. The US bumper regs of the time specified that the car could suffer ZERO damage (both cosmetic and structural) if it was driven into a brick wall at 5mph. It sure was fun watching my friend anna try to muscle over that non power steering when i lent it to her (she was a petite lady)
