Ok, i know theres bucket loads of posts on this topic but i cant find anyone who has done a L20b block with z22 crank, z22e rods (149.5mm long rods) and vg30de 87mm pistons. According to the engine designer (fantastic piece of software) it will work but a few questions i have are:

How far out the bottom of the bore will the piston protrude?

Availability of vg30de pistons? And weight of them?

Safe rev range? Ive found 6500rpm seems common safe redline

Will the z block canting the other way cause any issues since I presume your car was originally l series?

The L series sump and oil pickup should go on the Z series block, to give the sump the correct lean to counter the change in angle.

Nice, where does that leave the comp ratio?

Round the 11.5:1 so im told by the builder. Currently looking at z22 rods instead of l20 rods.

Anyone know where to get stronger versions of the z22 rods?

I'm running z22 block bored to 89mm, ka24 pistons, l20b rods and z22 crank, u67 head 10:1 comp, piston to deck clearance around .6mm... Pulled 130hp at the wheels with a very poorly setup set of twin 45 dellortos and non curved S2 bluebird dizzy..... In my 200b

Just last night I finished building the exact same bottom end but this time using a closed chamber and ported a87 head with Comp ratio of 11:1

Z22 block is somewhat identical to the L20b, you need to drill extra water galleries into the block to match the head, use the L20b timing cover, sump pickup and mounts... Main reason I used the z22 block was well availability and cheaper to bore out only 2mm the say 4mm on the l20b

Fair enough, im only going 87mm so much the same on price there. Would be keen to hear how this new bottom end/head combo pull together

It has a heap of down low torque up until around 4500-5000 then runs out of power, been told I need to retard my cam a few degrees to get a little more up top, (never dialled it in just set on No1 dowel hole) hopefully by doing that and getting the ignition locked and carbs tuned it will run a lot better, the new motor is going into a 520 ute so will more then likely pull pretty hard being in a slightly lighter chassis

Yea hopefully those few things keep it pulling through a bit further. Ive been told mine will have nothing down low and not a lot in the midrange but should have buckets up top.

Ah yea, should fly!
