i have just done 320 on the primer and it looked ok but then tried 600 to smooth it even more which it did but it looks too smooth and shiny even. is this too much for the paint to stick properly to it? is there an optimum grade? is 320 ok before painting (acrylic)
its not a show car i just want the paint to stick.

i would use 600 before colour too smooth it might not stick and to rough shrink back will show.
also wet rub it and guide coat.

what paint brand are you using?

i am doing a dry sand. maybe thats why it looks polished with the 600? i don't want to wet rub it as im too scared of rust forming.
i think i will stick to a dry 320 and see how the shrinkage goes. i can always then wet rub it back and paint a few more layers if it looks terrible.

i always finish with 400 dry, ive been told 320 works but 400 on the orbital is quick and easy and better safe then sorry :)

ok so i finished with 320 dry as i didnt want to sand any more as it takes ages and is quite boring after the first hour or so.

i painted my car (4 or 5 coats plain acrlic) on tuesday in nice weather (just before massive rain in the evening!) and put a real nice gloss finish on it which i am more than happy with.

in some places if you look in the light reflection very closely you can see some sanding lines very faintly. you have to look hard. mostly there is nothing showing through so i think i got away with it. but probably would recomend going the 400 as jackjack says.

may try and post a photo of close up if i can this weekend.

320 Dry might show sanding marks, i'd go min 400 dry.

I'd listen to Jono83. He helped me with my paint job...
