Post subject:  R31 Rear Caliper Pad Choice????

In the proccess of fitting R31 rear calipers on my SSS and am having trouble finding any decent pads.

What have people used for their set ups?

I have Volvo 4 spotters on the front and thought about changing the pads to Bendix Race (being mostly a track car now) but not sure if I can't source some rear pads that will keep up.

Thoughts?

Bendix are rubbish mate. Call Race brakes or QFM Friction. If it’s for the track and a bit of street use I would go RB72 front compound and Comp 2 rear compound. They work really, not to dear and don't eat rotors to bad. The Bendix stuff is only for the gullible street hoon.

EBC also rubbish

Ferodo DS2500 are very good but are expensive
Hawk pads are also very good, but again expensive

Best to support a local race pad manufacturer like Race Brakes and QFM Friction.

Ahh fair enough.

I'll give them a call at some stage. I thought the Greenstuff etc pads were meant to be ok.

Also checked out the R31 site and found that VS etc commo pads fit in the rears. Maybe something worth looking into perhaps.

Brumbrum, thank you for the offer. I've had a look. Appreciate it.

Will let peoples know when I find some info.

That's good info to know! please report back on what you go with.

When I mossied into my local place they said they didn't think there was a large selection for those calipers since no one would think of racing them, and if they did, they upgraded.

Quick update,

Just been quoted $180 a set for both RB72's for the front and C2's for the rear.

So yes, you can definately get different compounds for R31 rear calipers. I realise to those who already run this set up, this may be old news but to those who have never looked into this before I hope this helps.

Quick Q: Is the above price good? I really wouldn't know.

Thanks for the tip off MYDATO.

Regards

Scott.

I wouldnt worry about getting fancy pads for the rear.

I just run bendix metal in mine, unless you have adjustable bias you might find too much rear bias with pads with a high friction coefficient.

The front's on the other hand i use DS2500, highly recommended :D

You can't get anything but standard from Bendix to suit the R31 caliper. Unless that is, you use VS etc commodore pads and mod to suit.

I currently have Bendix Metal Kings up front and when the R31's are on I'll have cheap ebay specials in the rear. I only bought those years ago so I would have something until I sorted out what I required. I may require a brake bias anyway, and I'll get one if I do end up needing one.

How come the QFM pads are $80 cheaper than the Race brakes pads? $100 is alright for a decent set of pads.

I think it might have been 110 or something, I stand by them, its the only pad I stand buy now.

I got boxes of EBC green, red, yellow, blue pads,
Bendick pads, Rb's as well, I just find bang for buck QFM has never let me down.

Ok, I've ordered QFM pads as recommended by a few people here and elsewhere.

I'm getting the A1RM's for the front (Volvo 4 pots and vented rotors) and LM2003 (I think thats the number) for the rear. $100 a set. Brilliant!!!!

QFM were very helpful and the guy I spoke to sounded quietly confident that I shall be very impressed. I guess he likes his product.

So at least I now know there is a good range of pads for the R31 rears out there.

Will let you know what they are like.

Scott.

Would've been LTM003, which is very similar to their HPX compound. Just like the HPX they're roughly a Bendix Ultimate equivalent performance wise, but very low dust and rotor wear, so ideal for the rear. We don't stock any of the LTM003 because HPX is our preference in that performance range. FWIW we've got both HPX (Bendix Ultimate equivalent) and A1RM (Ferodo DS2500 equivalent) on the shelf to suit R31 rear. It's it's mostly a track car I'd choose the A1RM, but either should be fine in the back end.

Post subject:  Re: R31 Rear Caliper Pad Choice????

any of the pre VT holdens pads fit R31.
for cost ive always used VP shandy pads.these have different compound inner/outer.these also have more pad area than the nissan so cutting slots isnt a bad idea and some versions are thicker.

the rear pads are originally special.when new these had a safety recall due to siezed calipers.
a pad and piston change fixed the condition.

the inner pad overheats and heat is transfered to the piston.the genuine pad has heat insulating properties and must be replace before its worn out.

the caliper has handbrake intergrated and this gives more problems than the commodore pad.
magna has similar problem and XF is similar with wider disc.

It depends what you are using the brakes for.
Street.
rally.
supersprint.
race.

We had track tested by mr P ( super sprint Oran park) some $38 street pads & the performance was amazing.
So much so that some other competitors could not believe how good they were and were blown away by the price.

The same pads were fade tested last week.
Engineer was impressed by cold performance before fade test commenced.
Fade test started.
15 hard stops from 60K in 4mins to get them warm.( with pressure Pads & radar & G meter vs time)
No lock up allowed.
Then 4 hard stops from 100K consecutive with no recovery.
Constant 1g recorded on each of the 4 runs.
Engineer was again impressed, by fade resistance , lack of smell & smoke.
R32 280s front R31 rears. SnS rotors

So some inexpensive pads can do an excellent job.

We have them in stock.
