I wanted to know if anybody out there knows what models of Aussie 1600's had the chrome trims that ran front to back mid way up the doors/fenders.
Was it all models and no-one has them anymore, or the Deluxe GL, or SSS, or specific year??

cheers.. that answers that.

i'm in the exterior section.. next question.. anyone know the original Datsun paint code for the 1600 for gun metal grey?

i've looked at datrats paint codes etc, but they don't have the names, just dark grey metallic, light grey metallic... etc...

i do know someone here in perth that had a '68 that colour, haven't seen them in about 5 years though, might have to find them again.

yeppers, the chrome strips that run right down the side of the cars on left/right side same height as the front fender indicators.

and no, not that grey.. it was gun metal grey... i'll dig up the old photo of my dad's 1600 from back in the 70's, hang on, it's probably black and white. hahahaha

it was actually called gun metal grey i think... i'll keep digging... i woke up this morning and thought.. that would be a nice colour to paint the datto i don't own yet... i was thinking black... but a classic 1600 colour is the go.

That one pictured is about the only grey I've seen 1600's come in (although it might be a little darker in the flesh than the photo), and only pretty early models at that.

By "Gun Metal", do you mean just a dark grey, or a metallic ?

Hi guys,

I thought I'd revive this thread regarding the chrome strips running along the mid height of the body on the 'deluxe' 510 models and get some peoples opinions on them.

I've got them on my car and am trying to work out whether to keep them or get rid of them. The time has come to decide right now before blasting. I've been trolling through the 'pictures of 1600s you like' post and I noticed that there are hardly any (if any) with them still installed. I assume they're not super common but expected to see a few at least.
The chrome is in good condition but I'm just not sure whether to keep them as I can see them being difficult to find if I ever need to replace them. Also if I need to replace a panel only it might be a bit if a pain be a pain to drill the holes in the right spots on the replacement panel etc (assuming I can't find a deluxe panel). Plus I've got a mix of deluxe & non deluxe panels and am not sure which ones I'll be using (they're stored a fair way away at the moment).

What's the main reason people get rid of them? People just don't like the look of them? All of them are damaged? Or we're there just not many deluxes around in the first place?

Also, how common were these deluxe models and what other features did they have over the standard model? Just the chrome? Dual climate control?!

I appreciate any opinions or info before I decide to get out the polish or the welder!

Cheers

Chris

GL's had the trimming down the doors as ive already mentioned not deluxes.
The door trimming was on Aussie released GL only. Jdm GL is different.
GL's also had a clock in the dash, different GL labelled hubcaps, vinyl covered steering wheel, grey dash pieces on the intrument cover and glovebox lid and other small interior options. Nothing fancy really and definately no climate control.
I love the contrast of the chrome strips down the outside so id keep them as i love chromework on all old cars.
As you guessed tho most people remove them because they are hard to source or repair if dented, they are a little challenging to fit to replacement panels where you have to drill the holes right so they mount level, the clip holes also allow water into the panels unless they are sealed with silastic etc...

Hey nick,

Thanks heaps for for the info and pics mate. I reckon they look really cool on the stock car but not sure if they would really add much to my project and I think they may end up being more trouble than they're worth for me. Seems a shame but I think I might delete them or possibly regretting later.

I'll keep trolling through some more photos to see if I can see them on a rebuilt / less original car to see if I changes my mind!

Thanks again mate
