Ok, Trying to remove the cracked dash mat outta my 1600 so i can fill it and recover it. But the bastid don't want to budge!

If i remember they were held in the same as the door trims with those metal clips but i cant remember because my last 16 didn't have a mat to begin with. Any suggestions on how to get it out? I've removed the metal covers that are near the windscreen that hold it in, But other than that it should be free to come out and it won't.

Brute force required???

it is held in by nuts mate..

to get to the nuts you have to take the glove box out, also the dashboard from memory..

sweet, bit of bog fill, electric sander to smooth it out, then get it retrimmed, cost me $50 and that was with black vinyl and looked a treat

make sure you get the dash flat again, not just smooth, as there was one spot on mine were it was raised a little

Oh, and do a members ride section
I love seeing builds that include the basic often overlooked things, like dash pad repair etc

The standard 1600 dash mat is secured by six 8mm head nuts.

The best way I've found to remove it is as follows.

1. Remove the metal grille which sits above the heater vents (behind the dash mat) by undoing the phillips head screws.

2. Remove the glovebox, dash surround and radio/heater control fascia (again, undo the multitude of phillips head screws).

3. Undo the screws which hold the instrument cluster in and withdraw the cluster (dont unplug it).

4. Get a 1/4 drive ratchet with an 8mm socket (obviously) and an 8mm spanner.

5. Swear and carry on, and undo the six retaining nuts.

I'll post a dash mat repair explanation in my members ride thread soon.

p.s. If anyone has any dash mats they want to sell, i'm after a couple.

p.p.s. Sorry for the minor thread hijack.

Cheers

Jason

Ok, restoring the dash now that i have my ass back into gear.
Heard lost of people using Bog and sanding that all flat... Wouldn't it be better to use something that stays flexible for longer. And won't stay in the same spot when the foam of the dash around it shrinks due to cold, and expands with heat.

Wouldn't filling cracks with silicone be a better alternative? then sand that flat. Then cover?

once its bolted down, its not going to flex

and it will have to be covered anyway, be it with vinyl, or leather etc, so you wont really see it again

just make sure that it is perfectly flat! and little raises will stick out noticably

you could also use a plastic repair kits like for bumper repairs, as it has a bit more flex in it, and still sands easily, silicon would be too soft to get smooth i reckon
