So work continues. It's been a huge year so far. My wife and I are expecting our first children late November. Yes thats right, twins straight up.

I've been tinkering with the datto putting things into place.

I decided I wanted to explore another avenue for the suspension on the car. Up front I had my newly assembled coilovers (R31 strut, 225lb spring, Z31 KYB insert) and on the rear some Kings springs and flogged out Koni yellows. The rear xmember is just a stock one, so I was getting plenty of rear camber and toe.

I've always liked the idea of height adjustment without changing the travel of the shock. This is how alot of aftermarket coilover kits work for later model cars.

I had also been looking at a multitude of options for rear coilovers and decided to try and make some rear coilovers suited to S13's work for my application.

So I bit the bullet and bought a full set of new HSD S13 AD Coilovers. These came with a pair of 5kg(280lb) and 6kg(336lb) springs. These include adjustable twin tube shocks, rubber mounts and are more of a 'street' kind of shock. Perfect for what I am looking for.

So to get the front to adapt I looked at something I'd seen in the past, and that was a U-weld system. You start with a standard 51mm strut, lop off the the top and weld on a machined tube that has the correct ID at the bottom to fit snug and the correct M50x1.5 thread in the top section to recieve the S13 HSD coilover. I am using an aussie R31 strut as my core.

I bought these from a business called Angry Industries - https://www.facebook.com/AngryIndustries He was a champ to deal with and was helpful.

Here are some photos of my lopped struts, the welding process and then the complete assembled strut. The U-weld tube is welded to the cast of the strut and also plug welded twice on each strut. It aint going no-where!

Cleaned up, and chopped R31 strut.

Painted and assembled. Sexy Time.

For my brakes and hubs I am using Series 1 Bluebird 4 stud hubs, R32 GTR Rotors (296x32), R32 GTR Calipers and a Datsport caliper adapter kit.

The Datsport kit was pretty tight to fit on this setup. I needed to nip and tuck a few bolt heads to make it all fit, but with some thinking anyone could do it. I'm just a computer tech working from a garage with simple tools.

This is the engine bay now I have bent up my brake lines, installed the Wilwood bias block and done final fitment on the Stanza large can booster. I am using a 2 port Nissan BM50 master cylinder, NOS Stanza booster, 10mm firewall spacer, redrilled pedal and clevis fork.

Shiny strut tops - Thanks HSD!

More to come with how I have done the rear end. R32 GTR rear calipers and rotors, S13 rear coilovers.

Looks awesome.

I thought about doing coilovers this way when I did my struts but I thought there would be problems with fitting reasonable size tyres to the front.

My 510 has 17" x 205 tyres at the front, they just clear the guard and there is about maybe 8mm between strut tube and inner tyre.

With the springs running past the tyre as yours are what width wheels and tyres are you able to fit?

205 is the max front tyre on a 510 anyway mate.

I have 205/40/17.

Not many standard wheel arch cars run wider than 205's.

Yes bud I realize 205 is the max width tyre on a 510.

My question was with the coilover running past the tyre I dont see how it is possible to run 205's and clear the guard.

But you seem to of done it as you have said.

So I have pretty much finished it off for now.

We had our twin girls in November and life has been a little crazy.

I had a pretty long list of things I wanted to 'fix' on the car.

I was pretty happy with the exterior of the car. I hated the mirrors on it and figured while the doors were apart I'd replace the door handles with NOS stuff. Mirros are E21/2002 BWM flag mirrors I bought from a guy in the USA. NOS BMW stuff.

Engine bay is where alot of fiddling was done. I had a friend fabricate a new mounting sytem for the replacement radiator. Obviously the hoses needed to be replaced and the old Davies Craig EWP80 was swapped out for a new EWP115. I also installed a thermostat this time with the EWP. A friend suggested I drill out the thermostat as well.

I finished off the coil on plug conversion I'd started. Really happy with how this looks and works.

For a long time the interior really let the car down. Back in Aug 2013 I had a fella redo the carpet and recover the front seats for me. I decided I wanted more 'period' looking front seats as modern ones in a Datto can sometimes look out of place. I chose 240Z seats. PSI999 and myself fabricated a new rear mount to set them in place. I bought brand new OEM copy slip on covers and had the trimmer fit them with some new bolsters. The carpet has been made in sections that layer over one another. The carpet looks sensational. I am totally happy with it. I had a moulded carpet before and it was a poor fit. The new ones are perfect. The trimmer also has added quite alot of thick deader under the carpet which has reduced road noise significantly.

I finally mounted the 240k centre console and floor hand brake lever. They are a pretty good fit into a 510 and really 'complete' the interior IMHO. I am waiting on some different inlays for the centre console around the stereo. The woodgrain doesn't match anything.

I also managed to have some OEM style door cards remade. A guy in Sydney has been doing 4 door cards for a little while and wanted to get 2 door patterns done. I sent him a front and rear card from my car to make patterns. My old door were pretty crusty. Holes cut front and rear for speakers, crumbling board etc. New cards fit perfect and look awesome.

Since converting to coilovers front and rear and replacing pretty much the whole front end steering and suspension the alignment was very out. The rear had been upgraded to a Datsport adjustable crossmember that allows you to change camber and toe.

I took the car to Protrac Suspensions in Hillcrest and they guys there were sensational. They spent 3.5 hrs on the hoist sorting it out. The rear right wheel had 20mm more toe than the rear left. After some tweaking this was all rectified. They were excellent and would definately recommend to anyone wanting someone to take their time and do a thorough job.

Jason Broadhurst popped over on Saturday to help me get a tune sorted. The old Haltech E6K has made way for a PS500. After some tinkering in the sweltering heat, he popped in a base map and off we went. The car isn't running close to it's best performance wise, but everything else is superb. This is the first time I've run the car with full sequential. (Did you know the FJ20 was the first engine ever to run full sequential EFI?). We are planning to give it some more road tuning and then maybe visit a dyno cell at some point.

Here are some more photos of the car at the recent Jap car show. I am not the best with the camera but you should get the idea.

My only reservation is the overdone yellow on the window frames, would prefer chrome or black to match the wheel centres and would balance the car to the T while everything else does it for anyone - its just simply fantastic.
