You dont have to remove the outer quarter. Poke your head underneath the spare wheel well area and have a prod with a screwdriver around the back side of the lower qtr. There will be a rubber wedge at its lowest section which is a drainage point. The qtr sometime gets filled with mud or something blocks this drain hole and causes rust. If your boot and rear seat have rust from a leaking rear windscreen rubber or bootlid seal then the inside lower qtr is most likely rusty aswell...

Yep that's what I thought you ment nick, they look ok from under the car but I'll have a good suss with a torch in the boot. If there is rust does the outer quarter need to be removed to fix it? Like your pic?

Hey Jase,

Good luck with it all, long road ahead :)

I had rust in the exact same places, I had some new inner quarters made for it.

Cheers,

Trent

As did I. I also took the time to weld on thicker sills and braced the car.

Thanks for the input guys:) been researching / saving pictures of bracing for a while now so that will deffs be happening. As for rust I think I'm just going to do sh*t job of stripping the car and etch priming it then hand it to my crash repairer as I have no expirience with welding and I want it done right so it's not going to return anytime soon.

stripped the right hand quarter panel, quite disappointed lots of nastys under what looked like a nice very straight panel, there was looooooots of bog

looks like its had a quarter change at some point of its like, who ever did it was a sh*t house welder/panel beater, check the 5mm of bog covering the welds

oooohhhh and for my favourite I payed a panel shop to fix the rust when I got the car yeaaaaaars ago, I payed extra for him to weld metal back it over fibreglass (this was all when I was 15 and earning 200 a week very niaeve) he obviously took me for a ride, after saving my pennys for months for the rust to be" cut out and new bits welded in with no bog" what I really got was "smash the rust in with a hammer and fill her with bog" very disappointed theres ppl around like this(if your from the southern area-Lonsdale) pm me soo you don't make my mistake

please give me advise if this is fixable? or what would be the best options? I might try get my panel beater to come over and look but might be awhile, please someone tell me theres was worse haha I need cheering up lol

after looking at the quarter a few times im pretty sure the top damage is from a side swipe not rust theres a level line across it
[ img ]

and im thinking this was done after the panel was fitted as theres stuff all rust in the lower section hence why this panel was used, but who ever did it was a bad welder

only rust

Based on the photos, it doesn't look too bad. Needs a bit of a clean up, and some rust cut out. Have a crack!

oh and the worst, ill defiantly need a new l/h quarter after having a play with the magnet and noticing the inside looking very rippled and lots of lumps, I decided to see how deep the bog was, its 10mm deep  pretty sure its not for rust but more to patch a big dent/accident  so im not even going to bother strip this as the olds will kill me with the dust it will make, hopefully craig from tokyo2u can help me out here

The rear quarters on mine were the same, also the front under the windscreen wipers (That was an easy fix, just make a new one) The rear quarters, I just sourced others. Can be an expensive job if your not doing it all yourself.

Cheers,

Trent

Thanks Trent. Think I'll try save the drivers side quarter as its almost rust free but will hunt down a replacement for the passengers side. Yes it will be costly it will be a long project I think lol, I'll have to get all the welding done as I have no idea how. Luckily it's getting done by my friends panel shop but still will cost. Hopefully he will let me do some of the easier/shitty jobs to lower the cost a tad. What condition where you sills in? And how did you go re fitting all the door guts? Was it a difficult job? Cheers
