Thanks for still showing interest guys.
Seems photobucket is fixed, yay!

Over the last year I've still kept working on the Datto, weekends, weeknights.
Mainly working on the body, repairing rust in the doors and front guards.

As of 12:22 last night, the car is officially painted. Will uploads some pics soon :D

Repairs and straightness of body- great
Choice of color- love it
Paint texture- not so great

Parts of the car have a rough orange peel feel and look to it.
My door jams and bay never had this issue. Trying to work out why it's different. It may have been caused from having the spray pressure too low, I was worried about getting runs so applied 4-5 lighter coats.

Now to fix this I've attempted colour sanding, applied wet 1200-1500-2000, then hit it with the buffer.

See on the last pic where I've buffed one section which came up pretty good. Problem I have now is in some sections I've sanded & buffed too far and have gone through to primer :(

Feel pretty bummed about it. I guess it's fixable but just want it done.

Now what?
I'm thinking I have to keep sanding the whole car to remove the texture, then reapply a thick coat of paint.

What kind of paint is it? If it's 2K then thick coats are the only way.
Also if it's 2K, then you will have to sand back the whole area you need to paint and paint that whole section (so the whole door, or whole boot lid, or whole rear quarter).

Yeah it's 2k, it's lookin' like I'll give the whole car another wet coat.

Any idea if it's OK to paint straight over the super fine (1200 or higher)
Or should I bring it back to 400..

Tim, I'd probably go straight to 600 grit. Scuff it up a little and wet thick coat the whole lot. 400 may leave marks visible through the top coat.
1200 is probably to fine and it won't key as well.
Any areas that are bare metal, i'd prime first. My painter recommended to leave areas that are primed at least 2 weeks for them to fully outgass if the weather is cold. Melbourne is bloody cold at the moment...

The good thing about this is you are going to see any imperfections now that you can work on before the 'final perfect' coat. So try and concentrate on areas that aren't quite there before putting the final coat on and you will be laughing. If the coats are thick enough for the final, then even if you orange peel, you will have enough material to polish it out.

Hi guys,

Long time no update, mainly because there’s not much to update

My garage paint job turned out rough, but for now it’s acceptable. Looks good in pics but it’s far from decent which is a bummer.

But, its a datto so it will do for now! Plan is to have it professionally done one day.

Have been piecing bits together slowly.

The car runs, drives and stops 8)

I had water pissing out my bellhousing due to a rusted out welsh plug :x which is so annoying as I’ve disconnected everything thing, box out ect
So now I have to find motivation to put it back together lol

I’ve got a SSS 68 dash which I’m restoring, it’s looking ace
