I have -79 220C Cedric with SD22 engine and im swapping it for L24. It has 5 speed tranny on it but SD22 bell housing is different, starter is on the left side. I wonder does L-series tranny bell housing fit "bolt on" to SD-series transmission?

Might as well add this here: when you do a swap (SD22 to L-series, with L series tranny) do you need to modify your propeller shaft?

Bellhousings are interchangeable, I believe. With the proviso that the L-series bellhousing is off the same series gearbox as the SD22 one - ie all "71B" bellhousings should be interchangeable, but (for example) you won't be able to use a Stanza / 180B SSS bellhousing as these had the lighter duty "63A" type gearboxes.

Whereabouts are you located ? I have L-series gearboxes but would like a diesel bellhousing in order to use an L-series 5 speed in my FairLady.

I'm a bit far from you guys... all the way up in Finland. I just feel this forum is a good place to ask around as you guys have at least three times the amount of Datsuns we have here.

Wont the L24 (for example) go a bit further back than the SD22, thus moving the tranny backwards also?
