HI guys i have done the r31 rear brake upgrade on my 1600 and ive gotten upto putting the handbrake cables on etc. now i fitted it all up using datsport cables but i dont understand this, when the cable pulls down on the hbrake mech it is not clamping the pads once the handbrake is released the pads are pressed to the rotor by the tension on the spring. i first thought i had the calipers on the wrong side but i cant see how the cable would attach if i swapped sides over. does anyone have a picture from behind the caliper with this upgrade. hope this makes sense cheers
here is a photo of the left hand side

It doesnt sound like youve pulled the cable all the way.
There is a fair amount of adjustment in them.
Grab a hold of the arm that the cable attaches too and pull it down firmly, it should grip the rotor...

So what you're saying is that they work opposite to what you have? When the handbrake is OFF the brakes are Clamped ON and vice versa because of the retaining spring?
The way you have it connected appears correct and I don't think you'd be able to fit them differently.

The R31 rear calipers work as a ratchet system with the piston. One side screws out clockwise, the other Anti-clockwise, which makes them the self adjusting for your brakes and handbrake. If somehow that has been reversed, then that may cause your issue, however i can't see that happening.

But check it all over just in case. Pump the brakes a few times to bring the pads in nice and close. Jack the rear up and spin the wheel to free it a little. Then hit the handbrake a few times to work the cable in, It might just be a case of something sticking.

yes that is whats happening when the hbrake is off the spring hold the brake on. I did rebuild the calipers could it be that the pistons or screw/ratchet bit is in the wrong side?

I'd agree with Baz. The ratchet assembly sounds like its back to front.
