Hey guys,

I joined this forum a few weeks back because i was buying a new 120Y. My first car was a brown 120Y that i still own however its being used by my mum to get to the train station and back each day. I own a VS Calais with a converted supercharged V6 (L67) that is becoming a bit of a monster. Ive been looking for a daily for a while now, my dads friend Jim who helped me with my L67 conversion does Datsun restorations, this 120Y is the last one he has done. He said that this 120Y was in the best condition of all the 120Y's he has come across, with only 89044 original km's on it. He is now moving on to something else.

Model:
1978 Datsun 120Y

89,044km April 2009
106,000km April 2011

Cream

Resprayed original colour
Original chrome bumpers front & rear
Original badges
New bailey channels
New door seals
Original plastic moldings
New weather strips
Original grill
New lights all round
22% Tint

Engine Type:
A12

Engine Mods:
New valve stem seals
Duel fuel

Power:
69hp(says on plaque in bay...pffft)

Gearbox:
Standard 4 speed manual

Diff:
Standard

Brakes:
Standard

Suspension:
New front struts & springs
Rear leafs
New bushes all round

Wheels/Tyres:
Standard 12" with factory hubcaps

Duel fuel button

1/4 mile:
Unknown

Stereo:
Original AM radio
Kenwood CD player
Alpine 2 channel amp
Alpine 6x9's

Build Period:
2 years

This is buy far the best Datsun ive ever driven, it averages 750kms per gas tank, anywhere from 1000-1200 on a good run using both tanks. It cost me $36 to fill the gas tank that is from a Camry and about $30 to fill the fuel tank.

Im so OCD about originality in this 120Y i used the parcel shelf from my old 120Y to install speakers into, to prevent damaging the original one.

Enjoy the photos & let me know what you think.

Insanely cheap to run. Is it very, very slow on gas?

Looks like a clean car, and very original which is nice. I'm assuming it's all matching numbers?

It actually runs a little better on gas surprisingly, however the A12 will rev more on fuel or at least feel like it wants to rev more.

Your assumtion is correct

Not just yet, im getting the diff done on my Calais first, then i will get little 13's for it. Already decided on rim but im not sure about the width, im leaning towards 13x5.5 so its still easy to turn at slow speads.

Strange looking grille...

Hahaha Go team Econometer!!!! I have one too, I haven't seen many of them, mainly clocks, a few tachos. I'm going to join team Tachometer soon though. I've got the whole set at the moment.

Looks almost a biege to me, which is funny as a couple of weekends ago I met a guy with a 120Y sedan down near the Sydney airport. It was the same colour & had an FJ20ET with auto, BUT it used to have a 308 V8 & a nine inch diff. It ran around on 15 inch stell wheels with plastic hub caps from Supercheap & a rear venetian. Hard to pick, except the wheels looked odd. Couple of suggestions would be to mount the CD player where that slot thing is,above the standard radio. You could also try putting the speakers under the seats, to avoid cutting the rear shelf. I found some spacers from Supercheap that were deep enough to allow some good 6.5 inch 2 ways to fit that would slide under the seat. You wouldnt have to play the music as loud to here it. Also, I'd suggest getting some 13x5 1/2 Hotwires instead of the Superlites. That's what I've got on the 120Y I'm driving at the moment & with some 185/65x13's on them the rims really sit well on the car.

I was thinking the other day of putting a cd player in the map tray on passenger's side of my Y but it's a fair way to reach to swap cd's/usb's while on the move.

Probably best off removing your original centre console/gearstick cover and making a custom one to house the cd player, but even then you would be pretty strapped for room between the heater and the gearstick.

Or you could make a roof mounted console but non-destructive attachment would be an issue. and headroom...maybe

Just don't go cutting holes in the dash or screwing things into things that didn't have things screwed into them!

Thanks for the comments guys.

Ive basically finished building my Calais so im kinda getting the itch to start on the Datsun. That and im a little tired of the AM radio.

I made a metal bracket and it will be screwed into the metal plate directly under the glovebox, it can be reached easily, its secure, the holes are out of sight and its not taking any originality away from the interior.

Im only going to run rear 6x9 speakers in the rear parcel shelf but im not destroying the original shelf. Im going to use the shelf from my older 120Y that has the speakers currently in it, im going to get a mate at an audio shop to make a new shelf with the speaker holes where they are. There is plenty of clearance for the 6x9's and considering the size of the car it will sound mint. I also have a two channel amp lying around so ill use that and hide it under the passenger seat i think.

I havnt got new wheels yet, ill get them when i need new tyres. Ive got my mind set on the superlites over the hotwires, just dont know what size. 13x6 if i can but more likely 13x5.5.

Heres a vid of my Calais prior to it getting tuned. It made 850Nm at the wheels hahahahaha
