Try working 2 jobs, 1 of being autobarn which = BIG savings on many items i need for it, aswell as getting to know the industry alot better and making good contacts, and move back in with you parents, not that i have even left yet. i even scored half the shed to myself. be a tightass too that helps. al;ways recommend car bits when its xmas/b'day time, or just cash. beer is cheaper and gives the same desired effect.
hunt around heaps and buying 2nd hand is the go!

pretty much how i've done it :D

got some new seats, theyre in pretty good condition, however i might get them re-trimmed black or see if i can get a spray on dye or something so they match the rest of the interior

[ img ]

and here is one of the new rims on the car

[ img ]

one rim now has some nice fresh gutter rash! lent them to a mate for engineers certificate, anyway he went for a slide round a corner, lost it, hit a gutter. had to get another tyre as the belt collapsed. at least my rim was stronger than his A arm, and the gutter which is now missing a large chunk!

been a while since i gave an update.
have since got the car back home and sent it off to another panel beater to get the panel work fixed up, and painted. was picked up last friday and hoping to have it back by next friday all painted.
gone with slate grey off the new nissan murano/maxima/tiida.
excuse the shithouse pictures too, have no idea where the digi cam is, so been making the most of the mobile phone!

the little beast heading off....again
[ img ]
before it went though i seen it as a chance to actaully fit the r31 calipers :)
[ img ]
[ img ]
[ img ]

now i want opinions, rims with or without centre caps? if i go without i'll be painting the stub axle area the shows black, and the nuts are nice and new and chrome. i like them without to be honest.
[ img ]
[ img ]

also stripped, cleaned and sprayed the dash with VHT colour dye, satin black. the dash top is cracked but i painted it anyway as at the moment its only cosmetic and not a priority, and bloody expensive to get em re-covered i've heard?
[ img ]

and lastly a few parts i've been collecting for it while its been away.
180B booster on new 7/8" 240K mastercylinder and new 1600 clutch mastercylinder
[ img ]
valeo clutch kit to suit imported 180b's etc, need the 'longer' release bearing carrier to fit it.
[ img ]
2.25" mandrel bent exhaust
[ img ]
stole nik's idea to use the towbar for extra strength/weight
[ img ]
narva h4 outers which will be fitted with 100/130W globes, and hella H1 100w long range beam inners.
[ img ]
new pile (short) carpet, its a dark grey colour
[ img ]
i'm lazy and dont want my car gettin stuffed around with :) its only a basic alarm, anything fancy just equates to more hassles in my opinion.
[ img ]

more pics soon of the painted up shell

cheers,
dave

Coming along dave, good to see you are persisting with the datto, will look great in the end.

I reckon keep the centre caps on, my old man had the same wheels on his datto, he has upgraded to GTS2 skyline rims now, here is a pic with them on;

Also with your dashpad, dont pay someone to redo it, do it yourself, my friends have done them and they turn out great, just use a sander to sand back the cracked parts til they are flush, then bog the cracks with bog, re-smooth it with the sander, and then use spray glue and vinyl to recover the top.

Just take your time and it turns out sweet. pic below of my mates one he did himself;

Keep the updates coming!

Good work dave.

I run those wheels painted black without centrecaps on the r30, Looks better with out them. But they are still ugly wheels IMHO

Cheers.

thanks for the tip martin, i thought about that but wasnt sure how it'd turn out. guess i'll have to give it a shot.

yeah i know they aint the most attractive rims but they were cheap with legal tyres which is what i needed.

FJ20ET yeah? that was like the hottest 1600 when that thing came out - and one of the first to use modern rims on an older car.

dave, been busy with uni and the cars been sent off to a different panel beater/painter.
was supposed to be back at my house all painted last friday but one of the panel beaters working on it had to go to anglesea for a few days, so its been held up a bit. now aiming to paint it this thursday.

and yeah i agree without centrecaps

thanks for the support, cars like yours give me the inspiration.
oh and i didnt copy you with the colour either, had my heart set on a gunmetal grey of some sort (originally R32 GTR) and decided it had to be nissan, which left me with slate grey (off new murano/maxima/tiida), as the GTR one has a slight rose tinge to it which i didnt want.

cheers,
dave

Arh my first FJ 16, very fond memories......... big step up from the L20b I can assure you. I never thought wheel spin in 3rd gear was even possible.

Looking very tidy Dave, very tidy indeed 8)

You could try the wheels WITH the centre caps but perhaps get some "DATSUN" emblems to fit over the CSA ones?

Keep up the good work mate

Its good to see some people that are around my age that havn't said "I WANNA GET A VL"....

But us younger, more mature Datsun fanatics have seen the light... the goodness, class and ol' skool factor that is the Datsun. 8)
