good job with the thread, very informative read.

i've read elsewhere that u can use the ca16de inlet cams for a little more lift, handy for when some more boost is added. :P how much truth is in this?
would a set of adjustable cam gears do the job just as well? or even as well?

cheers

tommo

Cheers dude, sorry i aint had time to post on here lately but im busy trying to get the bluebird prepped for the DE

The ca16de inlet cam will give you a more lopey idle

The ca16 cam will open the valves for 248' where the standard intake cam opens the valves for 240'

It provides 0.8mm more lift bringing it from 7.8mm to 8.5mm (max valve opening)

From what ive read it should give gains right across the rev range

Exhaust cams are apparently the same...?

Ca18DE inlet cams are mid way between the Ca16DE and Ca18DET cams

ps. make sure you follow all engine manual guides and run the cam in

Sorry i dont know much about cam gears so i cant tell you if the same gains will come by dialing standard cams

Ca18det cam spec:
Type - Lash
Cam Duration(IN) - 240'
Cam Duration(EX) - 248'
Cam lift (IN) - 7.8mm
Cam lift (EX) - 8.5mm
lobe center angle (IN) - 120'
lobe center angle (EX) - 120'

Is there any hard evidence that NZ ca18de head actually exists?
Ive googled and looked around the net to no avail.
Cheers, :)

Well its refered to a Euro model Ca18de isnt it? the jappanese ones which ended up ere have the secondaries while the euro morel which NZ has comes with the 4 inlets into the head. weather its DE or DET it doesnt matter they are pretty much the same part its just the euro inlet design does away with the butterflys and i would say has better flow

I wanna try n get my hands on a head and inlet from NZ for my DET, ive seen a couple but freight would kill me cause its heavy and would have to ship

sorry if this doesnt make sense dan... what kinda evidence are you after?

The pics from johan's euro ca18det on the first page show what the NZ DE would look like, search on the NZ silvia forums cause they always talk bout how the aussies have some crappy butterflys that they dont have...

ps. some of the NZ silvia's are Jappanese imports so can have the butterfly head design... so check before buying

Hope this helps Simon

Simon,
Im just asking about the NZ ca18 head because me and my brother are looking into getting one shipped over from Nz.
We cant exactly look at the head in person before it gets shipped hence why in asking for evidence.
Cheers, :)

Oh ic... johanns pic shows the kind of head and inlet your trying to get

Most NZ ca18 S13's are Euro model but theres a slight chance it could be Japanesse model

But you would have to make sure the guy u speak to knows what your on about and get him to verify the runners for you...

The Jap runners split into 8 ports and have a butterfly actuator while the Euro model stays as four straight into the head. The injectors are centrally on each port while the butterfly model has them on 4 or 8 runners

We really shouldnt refer to it as the NZ version cause its the Euro model CA18 engine... you know like how engine manuals often have Euro and non European diagrams

...I so wish he had them ere so parts would be easier to chase up let us know how it goes gettin it over

If theres anythin else u need to know jus say n ill check

I bet the Euro inlets would be best for turbo cause your cramming boost into it, but id stick with the butterflys on a DE cause it will need them for low down balls

i thought this question would be appropriately placed here for all ca18 owners.

is the oil sender thread the same as the sr20? ie 1/8" bspt on the block?
i can get a male 1/8"bspt to female 1/8"npt adaptor for 2 bucks.
its a speco guage kit.

cheers

tommo

Removing the secondary butterflies is easy, but plugging up the holes where the rod goes through is a bit more tricky. I'm not sure what the advantage is for a street car as you will undoubtedly give yourself a flat spot. The JDM tuners would sometimes slice the intake in two in order to get at the holes easily. And while they had it apart they would siamese the intake to match the severely opened up ports in the head itself, but those were 500+ racing engines used for illegal night racing.

The 4 port head would definitely be nice for a na motor, but is certainly not crucial for det.

BTW, you can use an SR20DET light flywheel on a CA18DET. Not a big deal if you can still get both in OZ, but we can't get CA18 anthing around here.

2 questions

1 - is there a way to fit a CA without paying $1250.00 for a fitting kit ?

2 - do older RWD gearboxes bolt up, eg 260z 5 speed etc.

Thanks.
