Howdy,
just wondered which is the easiest R200 cv axle assy to recondition with new boots etc. Z31/R31.

Does anyone know why one axle shaft (not the inner stub) is longer than the other by 10mm?

There are 2 different types of Z31 shafts. 4-bolt & 6-bolt. They use different types of CV's too. The inner shadft is a different length in order to fit the diff carrier correctly (the ring-grear is offset).

It will cost you $65 per side for new boots to be fitted at the CV & Driveshaft Centre (near RPM on Deloraine Ave.)
(My Z will be running these axles & a 3.9:1 R200 LSD soon)
