Just a few notes on connecting the stock heater to an FJ20 engine: -
It matters not which heater pipe is IN or OUT.
Lose the stock 510 heater tap, it has and always will be a piece of crap.
Fit a Bluey type tap, it is all plastic and virtually failsafe/leakproof etc.
The passenger side hose from the heater has to do a complex double 90deg. bend as soon as it enters the engine bay to clear the head of the engine.
I used two 1/2" copper water pipe elbows soldered together to achieve the abrupt change of direction.
Pics. available
By cables, I assume you are referring to the heater/vent cables?
Well, the "heater" cable routes to the heater tap wherever you have located it.
The "vent" cable connects to the demister/cabin flap arrangement to direct the air into the cabin or up to the windshield.

It is a heater tap from a Bluebird.
My mistake if you didn't twig
A circular plastic housing ~70mm diam. which is mounted in the engine compartment.
The double whammy here is that it is simple, non corrosive and if it does develop a leak, it is not in the cabin 8)
You will need to make up a mount for the tap and use a longer cable to operate it but it is far superior to the plunger tap the 510 uses :D

Couldn't agree more ..... either they leak or seize up, and are a comlete bastard to change. Involves contortions that would have a russian 12 yo gymnast in trouble. :( I made the mistake of replacing a seized one with a new item once .... lasted about 6 months before it seized too. Cut my hand to ribbons on the mounting bracket as well.  After that
I just ran it without a tap altogether. Didn't produce that much heat in summer with no fan and at least I could defrost the windscreen (Canberra :!: :!: ) in winter.

Cheers, Neil.
