I dont think zac sold his car. He is UK and will probably reply to this

I have just bought a ka24e head and am undergoing the same conversion.

I saw your post on 1200 d My tips if you havent got a head yet try and get a nivara. The FWD head has the plenum facing the wrong way and it a bitch to get out the FWD pintara.

Cheers,

Richard

Thank you datsun 1600
Are you able to find the navara head easily with the same head gasket setup? I found that online catalogues dont really show the gasket pattern thats suitable for the L or Z series.
The other thing is that I wont be injecting this head.
Im looking at using quad c46mm motorbike carbs clamped on angled tubes machined and welded into the inlet ports and mild head work (saving to manufacture a manifold at least). Im looking at building a motor with no pollution gear and the L18 suits my needs well.
I plan on using the 1600 crank and 88mm bores hopefully for 1793cc.
I need to clear the bonnet of my datsun 1000 and with l18 rods I plan on decking the block to 204.1mm like an a14/15 block (thats 3.85mm less).
I cant mod the sump or any other method except lower deck height within reason. Im going to need custom pistons to get 11 to 1 compression.

Yes, I'll reply to this thread!
I have all the webpage still saved on my computer at home but I ran out of time when it came to putting it on a free webspace. I might speak to someone back home about getting the stuff taken off my hdd and put onto some free webspace if the interest is still there.

OK I got a good mate who may come to the party and get the stuff off the HDD for me :)

I swapped the TB to the opposite side but if I were 'd' I'd investigate a twin weber manifold from the 'states . However he seems hell bent on doing something different, much like I :)

Well its a conservative effort in comparison.
The manifold is 450 u.s. thats 600au plus shipping. So maybe 700au and with custom linkages closer to 900-1000au. ouch. :(
The lower deck height wont work unless I cut up the front cover so Ill just use keep the standard block height and mod my bonnet.
Do I have to source a z18 front cover instead of the z20? z20 parts are everywhere at pick-a-tart here in Melbourne in late vanettes.

Richard dont you need a z20 for your l20b or are you making an l18 hybrid also? Did you get a RWDNivara head I can only get a FWD at the moment for 165au?

I got mine off a FWD Pintara.... I got it at pickapart (a pull it off yourself place here in melb). It will be going on a L16 into my 1200 and will be turboed, after seeing zacs success its too hard to resist!

I didnt really click until I got home and looked at the head. Then I remembered zac talking about the RWD. The main problems with FWD are:

1. CAS/Dizzy on back of head.... not such a big deal unless u wanted to use them.

2. Throttle body is on the wrong end of the Plenum... so it faces the firewall.

So may not be an issue for u really?

The combustion chamber on the KA24e head leans itself towards turbo, it is fairly large, not sure as I havent measured it yet. But you could stuggle to get high compression. The KA24DE head (twin cam) would be the one if you could get the timing working, and also the valves to clear the block.

Anyway let me know if you want any pics of the head, cos mine is stripped ready to get cleaned up. I can get some on the weekend when I'm back at my perants house.

Cheers,

Richard

Well because you still have the dizzy shaft in the front timing cover, there is no real concern there. You can just run the trusty s2 bluey dizzy.

As for the combustion chamber and compression ratio. If you match the KA24 bore or go to 88mm, then compression will rise above 8 but then capacity is over 2 litres.

d, you should try and find the recent issue 2 of Race magazine. The editor is doing the port convesion you mention. It has a silver 260z on the front. Issue 3 will be out in a few weeks with results of the port tests too.
You can find the mag at big newsagents (as it's only a pretty new magazine).

zac did you bore yours out?

Im not too keen on boring out my block to 88 or 89mm thats alot out of the L block.

I havent lined my head up yet, are there any issues with clearances with the valves to block ?

No, I left it stock but compression was around 7:1! but I would bore it if I were building a custom block.
89mm might be a bit too much for turbo (cooling concerns mainly) but it has been done time and time again on n/a engines.

No valve clearance problems with the block on an L20b but an L16/8 has a smaller bore.

Yep makes sense...

I might have to go l18 which is the same bore as L20b (85mm??)?

Thanks for the help
