Hey,

I've been keeping an eye on this thread for a while,

and waiting patiently for a complete engine recipe

currently I'm looking at:

BLOCK
Early L20b
CRANK
z 2.4 rwd crank

Ka24de rwd head from 2002 Nissan Navara DX D22 2.4 petrol

Now need to sort out.
Rods
Pistons
Front timing cover
and plumbing..

waiting for final update on this thread..

Im on a similar boat still insisting on an L16 with the shorter deck coupled with the shorter KA head will just fit in a 1000.
To scared though to go the twin cam head so will try a jap taxi NA20s first if I can get one but prefer the ka24de head.

G'day Zac,
This thread must almost hold the record for duration on this site? I went back to its start, which was just after Ozdat went to an internet Forum from an email list. Great to read Zac510 is still giving his engine conversion experience. It was exciting reading as it was happening when he was living in S.A.! I read on your posts elsewhere that you have moved on to pretty sophisticated electronic automotive technology these days. What do you do in the UK?

Hi guys,

Great thread with awesome info, many thanks.

After reading this I've started putting a pintara FWD KA24e 12v head on my d21 Z.
Regarding the compression drop this brings about, could this not be fixed with a little head grind to drop the head chamber CC?

Thanks.

Hey guys,

I'm very be to all this and my engine has blown up in my 510
So I'm looking at doing the L20 block, z24 crank and a ka24 head convention just wondering if anyone has done the conversion with a u13 bluebird fwd head? And if you can still run a in block dizzy?

Yes, you can run an L-series distributor (+water pump and oil pump) by using an L series timing cover. You'll need custom plug leads and you'll want your distributor recurved to suit when you get it going.
The Bluebird head is far easier to get then the Navara (RWD) head and is fine for the conversion. It'll need a plug machined for the distributor hole in the back of the rocker cover and a few other things.

It's certainly do-able and should give great results but it's not a quick or cheap project. There are a lot of things to consider before you commit to it. How do you plan to get fuel into this engine? Turbo or atmo? What do you want to use your 510 for? Is there an easier and/or cheaper way to achieve what you want?

Cheers!

Well, I have searched wide and far on the net and still can't find any reasonable solution for pistons for the z24 block & crank to KA24e head swap. As DeviousKA suggested, using the Z pistons yields a theoretical ~7.7:1 comp.
I noticed something funny between the Z24 and Ka24e pistons. The Z24 pistons have small valve reliefs even with their dish, yet the KA24e pistons are nearly flat tops with no valve reliefs. ACL catalogues has the Z24 and KA24e piston dimension the same except shows valve reliefs for the Z. Is this because the Z actually needs the reliefs for clearance or is this to make it a 'free running engine' on chain?

Easiest solutions to gain the correct comp ratio still seems to be the one that DeviousKA suggested.... machine the width of the conrod small end down to Ka24e spec. That way I still have the meatier Z rods but can use std Ka24e pistons. Also probably makes it easier to source cheaper ka24e forged pistons rather than getting custom forgies made.
I am going to buy some stock KA24e pistons and see how this goes.

what about using ka20de pistons?

you can get them new ex Japan through nissan

I looked into getting some but the price scared me away.

I think when i look more into a twincam i might try and get a complete ka20de engine.

just find a kA24e RWD engine much easier and seen them in wreckers.

Otherwise there are heaps of ways of running the ka24de from the states

Problem solved.
Mahle Ka24e pistons with press fit wrist pins will work with the standard Z24 rods and give factory comp.
Had my block machined first size over and deck planed. Came up sweet.
Ready to assemble...

I'm thinking of a 2.3 L/Z motor with KA-E head. No EFI, I'd rather....

NAPS 2.2 block bored to 89mm and fit KA24E pistons on L20B or Z22 rods bolted to a Z22 crank. Yes the much larger KA head will drop the compression to 7.76, but because the piston stops 1.55mm from the top of the block you could shave the KA-E head all you want. i.55mm removed brings the compression to 8.63.

The S13 rods here are full floating. Be nice to have floating L20B rods.

KA and Z24 rods. Z24 look beefier.

Z24 and KA-E pistons. Because of the extreme valve angle on the Z24 the pistons need reliefs. KA-E valves ater more vertical and besides they are smaller diameter anyway.

I read somewhere billet roller rocker arms for the Ka24e where used by some race teams
Also the 12 valve mazda has some higher comp pistons that could be used.

The KA24E's pistons were a 2.8cc dish. The first few months of the '89 KA-E in the S13 had a 9 to 1 compression and a slightly domed piston. Never seen them but the Nissan part number is 12010-40F10

Interesting I thought there was a higher comp FWD model?

well this pic shows the rod bolts and most of the KA rod is lighter
would love to know if the shorter rod bolt is as good?
