It never ceases to amaze me how many people say, " man a Datsun 1600, I used to own one of these, one of the best cars I ever had". I just love the fact that no matter what you want to do you can do it in a 1600, rally, drag or circuit & be very competitive :D

I've had that a lot too, seems like everyone owned a 1600 once, Usually pretty positive comments though even when I drove around with 155 cheesecutters and hubcaps . Old Z's ,1200's + 1600's are classics now , though when I had a 1600 at high school they were just another "hoons car" ha- I must be getting old.

I ttok my 1600 to the panel shop 3 years ago to get HEAPS of rust cut out.
it was a very reputable work shop that did many a decent resto job on old classics.
the owner said 'what do you want to spend money on this old thing for? they arnt worth much , dont you prefer an old Mustang or something?'
I went on telling him that they can fetch decent money in good condition. he didnt really belive me.

went back a few weeks later to see if there was any progress and he had 2 other 1600's there.
one of them was a ladies car that gave $20000 for them to do a total restore. he had to get another body for it though cause it was too far gone. he couldnt belive that he had to pay 3.5k for a rolling shell in good nick.

he had a bit more respect for my car from then on 8)

Good comments i've had
"Holy sh!t, goes alright doesn't it?" after blowing away a mazda 1300 in a hill climb.
"*insert drooling here* omg i want one..."( just after my 2 1/2" exhuast was installed)
"Thats a sick car" comes from chicks mostly
"Nice ride mate, wanna check out my 280Z?" from a friends dad who is currently restoing his 280...lol mind you he also confused my car for been a nissan instead of an actual datto
"Gee, gets up and goes doesn't it!" from various passengers and my uncle whom was packing himself after i opened it right up.
"Holy f***!!! What the hell is in this!" After taking a few friends rally packing...nice sweeping gravel corner and alotta sideways action 8)

And bad comments
"So tell me...When are you gonna get a new car again?"
"your cars really a heap man"
"Go the datsun/datto!" sarcastically
"Whata sh!tbox"
and a few other comments previously mentioned.

oh and finally Dad's comments
"your've f***ing lost it, you really have" walks off.
"Why?"
"Your only wasting your money, your trying to make a maserati out of it and its always only gonna be a datsun"...This coming from someone whos owned 2 datsuns for the last...Oh i dunno 24 years??? My 200B and a 720 dualcab both from brand new :)

I really can't stand it when people just bag your car, they a) either have no idea what the ol datto, or whatever it is that you might have is capable of, or b) make out to know heaps about cars, but in actual truth, couldn't tell a steering wheel from a spare wheel.

EDIT: Or c) have no respect for cars in general unless its a bombadore or something modern/from a reconized car manufactor.

Bearing in mind that I've had my 240Z for 8 years now, I've kinda forgotten most of the comments from the 'early years' :P
But...
When I was looking for a car there was; "Why don't we get this Z - it'll be fun to work on" - Dad (aka Nissanman). Little did I know at the time, that someone couldn't afford or justify buying a 240Z when he got his 1600 back in '71.....
It was an excellent decision though - we bought another 240Z 2 years later, which is what dad is now (VERY SLOWLY) restoring & fitting an RB25DE to!
Thankfully the Z was only semi-Lucased, and Robert Bosch's finest soon fixed that!

"Is that a 260Z?" when asking about my 240
"Jap crap" - V8 dunnydore owner, shortly before being hosed by the old L24 turbo setup.
"" - XR6T owner, shortly after being hosed by the current L28ET setup :P
Comments at almost every petrol station - "I knew someone with a Z, great car!

"It's got round taillights like a Skyline, what is it?" - When asking about my DR30
"What model Volvo is that?" When asking about my Stagea

here's the one i hate most!
"are you sure the doors are shut properly?" just after they slammed the doors just because they aren't as quiet as their moms camry.

from people who dont know what a 1600 is when i tell them i have a datsun 1600...
"oh, an old datto bush basher"

from the girls when i tell them
"oh a datsun"

from the girls when i show them
"oh that's cute! take me for a ride???"

from the girls after they've told their dad their freind has a 1600
"my dad said they are kool and he/his mate used to have/rally one"

and of course from all the young guys
"does it go as good as it looks?"
"go the datto!"
"sick car bro!"
"bag it up johnny!"

I drive a 1200 ute, It has HiTech extractors, 2 1/4" exhaust (1 muffler), 180E Holley and some minor head work, its a bit rough on the front end which should be fixed soon ( Im a mechanic not a panel beater ), But it's so damn loud just because of the resonance, the best response i get at pulling up at lights and some clown in an 8 saying to me, "hey buddy whats in there 13b?" I usually just chuckle and say "yeah mate, wanna go?" I've never had to drag one yet as they seem to just want to putt off and feel a little intimidated. Hey it's only an A12.

I love the comments you get from girls like "Does it have airbags?" shortly after I hit back third and drifted a corner. and from dad "You'll be at this thing fixing it forever, you silly bastard" And from my boss "Your going on a road trip? Are you with the RTA?" **** assholes, no faith in the datto? Oh and from cops its either a defect or "wow I havent seen on of these in years"
