Post subject:  Fiberglass panel repair

Hi all

I'm looking for some advice on repairing the fibreglass bonnet for my 180B SSS. As far as I can tell, it was made in two parts: the bonnet panel, and the reinforcing structure on the inside, with the two components glassed together. The top part and the reinforcing structure are separating near the hinges, so I want to glue it back together, preferably without too much drama. What's the best approach for a permanent repair? Should I:
- Use epoxy to glue the section back together
- Use a polyurethane glue like Sika Techgrip or Sikaflex auto adhesive (https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/sik ... 84175.html)
- Or fibreglass resin and catalyst?

If anyone's done this sort of repair in the past, what works best?

Thanks!

I'd suggest the fibreglass method.
Why not take it to a 'glass boat manufacturer and get their advice: maybe get them to do the repair for you?

Good call - I hadn't considered fibreglass boat repairers. Thanks for the idea!

I was also going to suggest something similar if you don't have a lot of experience with fibreglass repairs.

However, if it were mine, I probably would have approached it by using polyester resin (the "fibreglass" resin) to "glue" the two parts that are separating. The sections may have separated through poor bonding when the bonnet was initially made and / or because the area around the hinge experiences a bit extra stress over time as it support the bonnet when lifted and when the bonnet vibrates during driving. I would probably think about adding some additional reinforcing layers of glass matt and resin to the inside of the bonnet to better spread out the connection between the inner and outer structures on both sides of the bonnet too.

All the best with it....let us know how it goes?

I thought I'd have a crack at bonding it before handing it over to the professionals. This stuff is the dog's private parts: https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/sik ... 84175.html

I ran a bead of the stuff in the affected areas, clamped it for two days and it seems to be a pretty solid repair.

10/10 would bond again

Well done!
Just be sure to wear a respirator/mask if you do any drilling/grinding/sanding of the FRP.
BTW the link seems to be a dud :?
