Post subject:  Datsun 120y gearbox

Hi All,
First post.
I have a 76 datsun 120y. Gearbox was stuffed, so found another one and installed it. All works well, except the reverse gear is extremely close to 4th gear. How can I adjust the revers away from 4th. Your help would be appreciated

What do you mean by extremely close? As in the gear lever position in reverse gear is very close to the gear lever position in fourth gear?

Hi,
first four gears are as I remember, reverse gear as you try to shift into reverse is right next to 4th. If you are stationary and try put the car into reverse, normally you pull the gear lever toward your leg, then pull back. If I do this, there is no drive. I have to feel for reverse. Its like there is an empty space where reverse should be.
If I drive, when I try for 4th gear, I have to act carefully or I will find reverse at 40kmh.

Is there a lot of free play, or 'slop' in the gear lever? This could be caused by worn gear lever bushes. There is one that sits on the bottom of the gear level and one that slides into the pivot point. If either of these are worn then it will be very easy to select the wrong gear. I don't know what the part numbers would be but I am lead to believe that they are available new through Nissan.

Failing that, I don't think you'll have many options, short of pulling the gearbox apart and trying to re-design it :(
