Thanks mate, I'm near Melbourne too. We should have a drag race. It's funny how my minor rebuild turned into a full blown tear down... I took out the core plugs because I was digging some serious gunk out of the water passages. Attachment:

I carefully scraped out and pressure washed all the debris and feel much happier with myself. Attachment:
I gave the old pistons a wipe and while removing the rings I found that this one was crumped on the side. The ring was jammed hard in there. Attachment:
And now I have a set of flattops. Attachment:

I'm finding this process all really awesome. I've played with cars for many years but this time I have the time and space to really explore what I'm doing, it's great. I thought there were way more active members on this forum, but I think I'm mainly just recording a good log of this Datto. Attachment:
Tomorrow morning I'm buying a gearbox..... 4th time lucky, right? Guys? I highly recommend checking out this book "How to keep your Datsun alive" I bought it off a bloke in Texas on eBay. Attachment:

Good luck with the gearbox. Basically, if you find one that is shorter than the 180B one you posted earlier, it'll be a Stanza 5 speed or a 1600 4 speed. Both will fit without tailshaft mods. Yeah, not so many active people on here nowadays, facebook has taken over. Fine for instant gratification, but not so good for lasting information. Engine build looks like its coming along, I'm at the same stage myself with an L18 rebuild (should have had it finished already but stuff happened) |

yeah I found a FS5W63A, it'll be cool having the dogleg. You can see that I also have a FS5C71B, a 180b one and an unknown box. Attachment:

I'm happy to have both the dogleg and C71B. Attachment:
Today I honed the cylinders. The tool is a drill attachment, sanding stones attached to three arms that stick out under load of a spring. After a coat of oil and kero, you stick em into the cylinder and with a medium to fast setting on the drill, thrust the drill in and out of the cylinder about 5 times and check. Here's the first cylinder done and you can see the finish is much nicer.

I then placed the main bearings, greased them up and installed the crank. Stoked.

Yikes mate, I didn't drop 'em. I didn't have a ring expander so I tried this method of sticking some feelers under the ring ends, and another one on the far side to pull the ring on, then slide the ring down the feelers into position, then remove the single feeler to let it click into place. Pistons are ready to go in.

Since this is the only active build on here, surely some fellow Datsun owners can chip in and help you out here. What do you need to get this on the road? |

So I was happily rebuilding today, did the timing, cleaned the timing cover, all well and good...Then I went to give the crank pulley a little sanding... Attachment:

Look, I'm happy I found it rather than not, but now what?I think all Lmotors can use the same pulley, but a quick search showed little for sale. |

So I suppose I need a crankpulley! I need a throw arm and bearing for the gearbox. Brake lines. ... Surely that isn't it? Wow I'm close! |

I think all Lmotors can use the same pulley,
There is a bit of variety - some have a single groove for a single belt, some (like your broken one) have two. The timing indicator on the timing cover can also vary, so timing marks on pulley may be different, etc.But they will all bolt onto the crank, so all would work in an emergency. Do you need a two-groove pulley, or would the singe one do (ie do you just have water pump and alternator, no a/c, etc) ? |

So that pulley took forever to come - TOLL lost my address, they said it didn't exist. Which then made things complicated because I bought a house and moved the last couple days. Found some time between renovations to work on the Datto. I have this neat gap in my bench that comes in handy in times like these - reconditioning the oil pump. Attachment:
Making sure the oil drive is correct. 11:25

Then I checked and rechecked the dizzy over and over because I had the book telling me #1 is the top left position. But at TDC the button is pointed to bottom left. Sorry book but I'm going to go my way for this one.

And this is how I finished this 40*C day in the shed.

Next up is to clean and figure out this beast.
