Some of you probably saw it for sale.
It's in pretty good shape, the dash is good, there's a rip in the drivers seat, but otherwise I'm really happy with it.

I've been a tinker of cars all my life, I suppose starting when I was about 3 years old and told my neighbour that I was impressed I could see that his car had big brakes.
This Dat will be my 10th car, and I bought it on the 10 Oct. Let's get superstitious, eh?

1968 Datsun Rolling shell.

I'm picking up an L16 and 4spd on Saturday, and the lower grille moulding. I still need to source the moulding for around the headlights, and then some body badges.

I'm really excited to get this car going, and to become a member of this forum!

She's home. The fastest she's been in 9 years on the trailer tonight.
Picking up the engine Saturday.

Mega excited.

I'd say 180B 4 speed, basically same box as standard 1600 but a few inches longer.

Today I attacked a little bit of surface rust that looked like was going out of control.

Which led to me noticing that the brake booster was rubbing against the strut wall, so I took out the booster, clutch and pedals to see that something dodgy is going on. I believe that this isn't a native 1600 pedal assembly. You can see in the background the mess that's going on.

So now I'm going to either find an original pedal assembly to align the master cylinders in their proper spots, or I'll see if I can make it fit by welding in a plate and making my own holes.

How big is the booster ? 1600's originally had a single un-boosted master vylinder, they need a fairly small diameter booster to fit (180B is the usual one people go for). All the extra drilling might be to adapt whatever booster you have to the car rather than the pedal box being wrong.

After cleaning up the cylinders and with a bit of messing around with the pedals, I managed to mount the brake booster about 5mm towards the centre to get the reservoirs off the tower.

I wonder where I can source a gearbox? 🧐

What sort of gearbox are you after. There are a few 5 speed long boxes on gumtree but they’re real expensive.
Where abouts are you?

I was looking for just a cheap standard 4 speed, but so far I've bought two that don't fit! haha 😬
I think I'm just going to make the 180b one work.

Oh, sorry I'm about an hour north-west of Melbourne.

Not worth the hassle shortening the tail shaft for a 4 speed.
You should just upgrade it to a 5speed. I have one but I’m a bit far from you.

Today I bought a FS5C71B - 5spd box.

Also, I bought some eyebrows from California for $150. Super happy with them considering the market in Aus is demanding like $600 for them.

Here's my first "It's not stupid if it works" moment. I could not undo those bolts. The front pulley nut loosened before these came loose. So you can see that I used a fan belt pulley bracket mounted to the block and the flywheel to keep it from rotating.

I've decided to rebuild the engine as far as replacing the piston rings and chain. I'll probably leave the head as is.

I have some flat top pistons and a full gasket kit coming, hopefully start rebuilding next week after the head has been shaved.
