With a few people requesting photos of my Commer here we go, it's made by Rootes of England in the 60's later bought out by
Dodge. I was showing my 53 Morris Oxford Traveller at a RACQ all british day in Brisbane in 2012

And talking to people as you do about your pride and joy, anyway this one guy had photos of his projects which happened to be Commers and i said iv'e always wanted one so a deal was struck and i ended up with a 62 3/4 ton series 11 camper van.

In it was a L20B nissan with BW35 3 speed auto

The side door has a automatic drop down step
[ img ]

It had some rust in bottom of back doors, above rear wheel arches, 4 corners of the van were stoved in so not much at all.

The engine was a bit crusty to say the least

I like this build. I always liked the aerodynamics of the commer van. I assumed it lead to good fuel economy. How does the L20b compare to the standard motor? Economy ?

Well i haven't had a chance to do an economy check yet as i'm still ironing out the bugs so to speak, I had the motor fully rebuilt the cam was reground to the SSS specs new over sized pistons, water pump, main bearings, basically everything replaced, extractors, port and polished, replaced the old carb with a weber 32/36 and made a custom air box drove this for a few hundred K's but was still having missing issues so i was planning to drive from the sunnycoast to melbourne for xmass so i decided to change a few things before i went that i wasn't happy with.
Put in a new electronic dizzy, a new fuel pump, a high pressure oil pump, and a 100 amp alternator out of a nissan patol (easy done).
And also changed the exhaust system AGAIN to try and stop the droning.
Also fitted a new oil pressure guage and water temp to keep a better eye on things.
All good one would think, I did a road test for a few days before heading off and all was working great, the first leg was to head to the gold coast to see dad, we headed out all going good so the first servo about 45 klm out i decided to stop and do a quick check on things i pulled over left the motor running had look under neath for oil or water leaks all good nothing wrong there temp good oil pressure good all great, being satisfied i headed out through the off ramp foot down picking up speed then it started missing hugely
so i pulled over and she was idleing normally and i couldn't find anything wrong so off i went again 20 meters further it started again,
now at this point my wife was giving me the evil eye and saying thats it were not taking this piece of sh*t all the way to melbourne i want to go in a real car.
So stuck on the freeway with an angry female i bowed to her anger and we were towed back home changed cars and started again, i was devoed turn out there was sh-t in the fuel tank which came adrift and fouled all the filters

Oh have I been there.(more than once)
I always liked Commers cool project. Growing up our neighbor had a Commer Karrier and we had a VW Kombi. Probably why I like them.
Looking forward to more on this project

Fitted all the air controls and fan and demister ducting from a datto 200B.
[ img ]

Here i fitted the battery under the passenger floor
[ img ]

The commers came with lever rear suspension off the diff here i made brackets where the old levers were attached to the body and welded bolts to the diff housing to attach the new shocks.
[ img ]
[ img ]
[ img ]

Originally the brakes are 9" drums front and rear which i rebuilt so i also fitted a booster in front of the radiator to help stopping
[ img ]

The beast ready to be installed
[ img ]

Sitting in place she fitted in quite nicely
[ img ]

My first attempt at the air box this is on the old Hitachi carb, the silver thing is the auto trans cooler.
[ img ]

Had to extend the engine lid by 200mm to the rear

Till next time
