Hi all
So, I have a Datsun SSS Stanza which has a stock L16 in it which I am rebuilding. The bottom end is going to be stock aside from slightly oversized pistons, but I am putting on a 180B head with 180B SSS SU carbs (I believe they are 38mm Hitachi SUs). However, I am also putting in a fairly warm cam, and I have been told that I will need new jets for the carbs? Can someone confirm this for me? And does anyone know where I can source these needles, and what sort I will need? I have been doing a lot of Googling, but with no success. Thanks in advance!

BTW the cam is http://tighecams.com.au/cars.htm (Nissan -> l-series -> 812C 68 Works, but with modified overlap for increased driveability).
Also, know this cam might be a little much for those carbs, or so some people have told me, but it's all I can afford atm. I do plan to put webers on it down the track, and possibly a different cam depending on the characteristics of this one.

Bump - I bought some needles off a bloke on eBay who assured me that English SU needles would work on my Hitachis - not only did they not fit, they were way too big anyway. And, on top of this, I have discovered the stock needles have been bent by someone, so reusing them is no longer an option... Really need some help on where to source some needles!!!

Stock needles should be in the ballpark - yep, you're fitting a cam but to balance that your engine is lower capacity than a 180B SSS engine.

English 1 3/4" SU needles fit Hitachi 44mm SU's but I believe the 38mm Hitachi won't work with English 1 1/2" needles.

Tried a Nissan dealer for genuine needles ? They also pop up on ebay from time to time.

Hey Dave,
Yeah I've tried Nissan, with no luck (they didn't even know what I was talking about :| ). And I thought about that, but I was told I'd need richer needles by another bloke - anyway, I've managed to source some second hand needles, which will hopefully get me running in the meantime. Still got to figure out how to tune the damn things, if they even work... :?
And cheers for the link lampy - I have the feeling that if the standard needles aren't rich enough, I may have to go down this route...

Hey Dave I know you used the British 1 3/4 sus, did you or anyone else know how to get the Hitachi 44mm going?

I believe the 44mm Hitachis will take the same needles as 1 3/4" SU's as the jet is the same diameter in both. I am using BAX needles in an L18-and-a-bit (87mm pistons) with a 72 degree cam. These needles were selected by a good dyno tuner experienced in SU's.

I have 44mm hitachi's in the shed but haven't personally used them, as parts are way easier and cheaper to get for the pommie carbs.

I'm looking at similar but only a 68 cam with a slightly ported and shaved head Dave. Thanks.

From reading crud on the internet I am led to believe that the early 240z dome tops had needles that were adequate for stock l24 then they changed in 71_72 slightly richer profile then went to flat tops after.

So if they are l24 they might be ok one mildish l18 I'm hoping.

Worth a try !

I used the factory Datsun twin SU manifold, ported to suit the larger carbs. The bigger SU's have 4 mounting bolts compared to only two for the 38mm ones, but (at least for the british ones) they bolt up quite happily only using two of the 4 bolts.

Well how did you fix throttle linkages Dave? 44mm rotate throttle opposite at and also the shaft that joins the two carbs is too wide. Hmm

To be honest, I don't remember exactly  Most of the linkage is Triumph (that's what the carbs are off).

Mine are british SU's, not sure if they rotate the same way as 44mm Hitachis or same as 38mm Hitachis ??

Looks like will have to make something up and get it made better for regular use. Thanks Dave.

Worked out how to swap l18sss linkage set up to l24. Needed to unscrew throttle blade and rotate it so would spin opposite direction like l18sss set up.
Need to grind excess mount tab for carb to manifold so throttle plate screw gets full travel. Also need to either shorten throttle blade shaft to same length as l18 or shorten the ball bearing linkage that bridges the tabs.
Bit of mucking around but doable easily if you have the spare carbs to pillage

All swapped over, any one know the thread and pitch of the brass screws that hold the butterfly's to shaft?

Also if I can redrill the butterfly's I can use the SSS linkage between the carbs no mods. The l18 butterfly screw spacing is 34mm the 240z is 37mm

Well throttle shafts in l18 SSS are smaller than 240z but started porting manifold to suit 44mm carbs.
$15 die grinder bits off ebay and 1 hour by hand slowly coming along ok. Bit rough but just taking out meat bit by bit
