I've almost finished prepping l16 for Install in stanza. Woke up and thought did I bolt oil pick up to block.

Sumps on and sealed. Is it viewable from the oil drain Hole or Is it sump of again and get another gasket again lol.

If you pull off the sump you Shouldn't need a new gasket. Unless you used rtv or something on it.
I've had my rocker cover off about 20 times,( same type gasket as sump.) Still on the same rocker cover gasket and no leaks.

I put rocker cover and sump gasket on with a thin smear of grease, baz told me to do this.
He said actually to glue the gasket to the sump and rocker cover first, then grease the other side. I didn't have any contact adhesive at the time but.

For the sake of something so serious I'd pull the sump off regardless and check. It's not worth the risk of having a blown motor and having to pull it all out anyway. A sump gasket must cost $30 at most?

Try to prime the system with a drill driving an old oil pump and dizzy drive, pump until oil comes out oil pressure hole, remove oil pump and fit good distributed drive and oil pump . If it doesn't prime then pull off sump and fix

Looked in sump plug Hole Yep there's the pick up. Dropped sump and yep all bolted in.
No head on block and I do up sump bolts again and rotate engin. ... twang ! chain tensioner stop drops out and tensioner falls out.
Now front covers off and I will be learning how to time the engine from scratch.
4 to 6 years learning on l series and I was proud never to have dropped the tensioner yet.... :-( had to happen eventually

This link and the one marked with white next to it are the only ones I can find.
How many links down the tight edge between cam wheel mark and crank mark?
42 links in a chain - 30 cans In a block of xxxx gold. maths is too hard today

not sure how many links exactly but this guide should help, the chain should be marked unless it been out and cleaned before, you'll know more once you pull it all apart. however it doesnt really matter if you line the marks up right as long as you get all the slack out of the chain and the TDC marks on cam and crank still line up. You;re best off doing it with the head on now mate, and put the timing covers and sump on after.

Hope this helps,

I've got It apart and head on now and marks lined up. chains tight. The cam v notch Is not In middle of the notch but Slughtly to the right but half In half out of notch. That means like me slightly retarded.
Had a half hour Window just then and that's as far and as I got.

is it an old chain? if so you will have some stretch in it, as long as you're not a whole tooth out you'll be fine, youd need an adjustable cam gear to get rid of half a tooth. Fit the tensioner then rotate the engine twice and re-check your marks. If they line up within half a tooth you're good. If its a whole tooth you need to re-do it obviously.

Luckily this engine does have an adjustable cam gear now. Drilled for another 6 positions ;-)
