Hi I currently have a datsun 1600 with a stanza box in it. I want to have the car original as possible but unfortunatly it has an ugly silver gear stick. I have purchased an original gear stick but the selector has a different way that connects to the box. I have the original 4 speed as far as I know and it doesn't have the striking rod sticking out of bottom and the mounting bracket for the gear stick is missing so I will probably need one and if the standard gear stick will fit the stanza box? Thanks

Your pictures say it all.
Totally different.
Closest you'll get is a cut'n'shut with an original 1600 stick upper section welded to the Stanza lower and maybe the heat discolouration can be kept low within the gearstick boot. Big issue will be getting the stick at the best/comfortable angle....best of luck with that.

Yeah I thought so... So which 5 speed gearbox would allow me to utilise the original stick if possible? And where would my best be on finding the mounting bracket to hold the gear stick in place?

Datsun 2000 Sports or early 240Z boxes (good luck......). To use a 2000 sports box, you will need to find both the 2000 sports box, plus an very early 240Z box to get the correct bellhousing to bolt it onto an L-series engine. The 240Z box is longer, and will position the gearlever maybe 4 inches further back in the transmission tunnel, requiring cutting and welding of the tunnel. Only the earliest 240z boxes will do for the bellhousing, almost are you come across nowadays are the later style with the same gearlever setup as your stanza box. BTW, only stanza and R30 skyline are the correct length for the shifter to come through the original 1600 shifter hole in the tunnel, all other gearboxes are longer.

I'm with Mr Midlife - save yourself the angst of looking for rocking horse teeth in a haystack, and do a cut and shut on the shifter, followed by a rechrome if you can't keep the heat affected zone within the gear lever boot. Whack the original rubber boot over the workings, and a 4speed knob on and no-one will be any wiser.

EDIT: Now that I've looked at the picture, someone has fitted an abortion of a gearlever to your stanza box to bring the gearknob further back (maybe some non-japanese-sized owner in the past didn't like the reach to the standard one). There are plenty of levers (bluebird / zed / stanza / 200B / etc) that should look much more like the original 1600 one. If I remember tomorrow, I'll have a look through my stash and see what I can find.

Also, looks like you shell has had a "long" box fitted at some stage - the transmission tunnel hole has already been enlarged.

EDIT EDIT: I've looked at doing something similar to what you want to do (adapt the early style shifter setup to a later box to get around racing regs that said I had to use an original box - yeah, yeah, call me a cheat, everyone does it, insert other excuses here  ) - I ended up with a couple of half-dismantled gearboxes that didn't look like they were going to be happy being merged together and am now in the market for a 2000 sports box.

I have a number of just the original gear sticks i can sell, along with a range of both 240 Z boxes with the original close ratio sets as well as a couple of Spirts 2000 Option boxes, known as Mid Close, and Ultra close.
I also have a bellhousing that will convert either of these Option boxes, to fit onto a L series block.
The Option boxes were for a U series block, that has starter on LHS of car.

Work out what you want to achieve.
The original 5 speed box as supplied as a Competition Part by Nissan, for the P/H510 body is well and truly NLA,
But, a Datsun Sports type box can be set up the same.
240Z type A box, is WAY too long, gearstick will be near your elbow, almost!

Yeah I wanna keep it original and I don't wanna cut anything. Eventually I wanna have a normal gearbox with gears in the normal position ie. 1-2-3-4-5-R does an r30 gearbox give me this option? Will the stick come out the original gwar stick hole?I will need the original mounting bracket for the 4 speed that the gear stick bolts too. And if the original stanza stick looks anything better than the one I have would help. I don't want to pull it apart too much yet as its my wedding car in a few weeks and in all jap day but I want it looking at least a little more normal than the eBay special that's in it ATM.

A Stumpy 5 speed from a R30 or MR30 is what you need.
Stock 3.3 first gearset is what they come with.
The mount to body is in the same position, the stick comes up in middle of tunnel hole, and looks normal.
Dont have any of those though!

Got the option boxes that are same dimensions, that have the two different close ratio 5 speed gearsetsthat are normal shift pattern.

Yeah I think the r30 box might be the go. I have found a 180b stick for now I might look at changing the box over after my wedding as its the wedding car :) I'm just keeping it original pretty much and just enjoying it. I might look at l20 and twin carb later down the track just for a little more power but that's bout it thanks heaps
