So, if I want to get from Tullamarine airport to the Box Hill / Blackburn / Mitcham area, how do I do it ?

It will be on a Saturday morning, catching the 7:35am plane into the airport.

Closest train stations to the airport are Broadmedows and Jacana, on the Craigiburn line. You'd need to get a bus from the airport to one of those stations, then catch the train into the city, then change onto the Lilydale line and catch another train to Box Hill.

Or, maybe catch a shuttle bus service from the airport to the city, get dropped off Southern Cross Station, then just get one train to Box Hill.

Or, see if any Ozdat members are feeling generous!

Can anyone else think of an easier way?

Definitely go the Shuttle Bus option to Southern Cross Station. SkyBus leaves the terminals every 10 - 15 minutes and it's much cheaper than a cab.

From there the Belgrave or Lilydale train lines will get you to Box Hill. Make sure you buy a Myki card, they sell them there.

Hmmm, thanks guys. I've only got an hour to get from the airport to Blackburn so maybe not feasible to come into the city and back out again.

Might have to look at cheap car hire from the airport.

Cheers :cheers

Yeah that's cutting it fine, Google maps says 40-45mins.

dont know why but always though you where in Adelaide Dave?
Well anyways at that time in the morning could go either tulla fwy through bell street (route 40) all the way till it turns into Banksia st (still route 40) then turns into Tram Rd (still route 40) then turns into station street then turn left ontol Whitehorse rd or canterbury rd to get to blackburn area. This avoids all tolls as toll starts after bell st exit.

you can risk going all the way through tullamarine (toll road) then zoo through to eastern freeway all the way to blackburn road but sometimes from 9-10 can be quite busy

Spot on with your Route 40 directions. With no major hold ups usually takes less than 1 Hour Bob.

I agree that Route 40 (Bell Street) is direct and the logical route to save tolls. But there are lots of intersections (traffic Lights) and local shopping strips to pass through as you go east, then south east.

If I was tight for time and not familiar with the roads, I would stay on the Tullamarine Freeway past the Bell St turn off and continue to travel on the City Link tollway (same road as you're on -Tullamarine freeway ) to the Flemington Road (City) turn off, on Left. Then approx 500m turn left off Flemington Road towards the Melbourne Zoo, following the signs to the Eastern Freeway. Going generally east across the top of the City. You travel through Royal Park past the Melbourne Zoo, past the Melbourne Cemetary, onto Alexandra Avenue through Carlton, then Collingwood which then becomes the Easten Freeway (no tolls).

This route takes you closer to the city, but closes the gap between the two Free/Tollways i.e. less traffic lights and less local traffic. It's basically follow the Eastern Freeway signs, from City Link toll way to the Eastern freeway. You can pay the City Link toll up to 24 hours after you travel (by phone).

The Eastern Freeway will get you very quickly (100kph) from Hoddle Street Collingwood out to Box Hill/Blackburn and Mitcham, by turning off at the appropriate exit and heading south about 2 -4 KMs from the Eastern Freeway.

Check out both routes and decide which you prefer. Time of day will probably make a difference.

Personally I would stay clear of the city.
Getting from the Airport to Box hill on a Saturday morning shouldn't be too bad, but you will have all the school mums/dads taking their posh cars to posh school sport, and most of them are half cut from the night before and can't drive at the best of times.
If you want the least amount of intersections, I'd go the western ring road all the way to greensborough, and then down to lower plenty road, and then down Fitzsimons lane.
I used to drive that way most of the time to get to the Eastern 'Burbs and it was a satisfying drive (back in the good old days when the 'ring was actually 100!).
That's if you want a "satisfying drive".

If you want to get to where you are going quickly, then what RichardC suggested would be probably the quickest. The Zoo area is probably the slowest, but either side of that you should be laughing.

There's many ways to cut it and Bell street wouldn't be too bad, but you would get frustrated by the traffic light sequence (Vicroads just can't get it right.)

Thanks guys, public transport is looking not particularly helpful at all so I'd say I'll be hiring a car (if I decide to come down at all).

Just to clarify in case it came out wrong, the "if I decide to come down at all" bit isn't a dummy spit due to the difficulties of getting around :giggle:

I'm looking to do a course down there for my own enjoyment, but also have a lot on at home currently. I'm still tossing up whether I actually have the time / money / could be bothered to make the dash down for the weekend.

Thanks for all the tips

Would this 'course' be at 'VHR' in Blackburn, Dave?
