Anyway decided to pull my finger out and get this thing on the road again. The head I ported had got a crack in it and couldn’t be fixed, so I tried to put a standard head on it to keep it running but the compression was waaaaay too high and with a standard cam it wouldn’t run, no matter how much I pulled timing out of it. It wouldn’t even run on e85, it would just ping under load. Well that was a few years ago.
So I’m waiting for a shop to finish machining the new head, I ported a new one, didn’t put as much effort into it as the original one but I’m sure it will go alright. I just ported the inlets so a 39mm steel ball would roll right through it.
The valves are the same as the old head, 44mm intakes and 36.5mm exhaust. Done a little bit on the exhaust short turns and Unshrouded the valve heads in the chamber.
Same cam will be run, I think it was a 1308a Clive cam, it was close to 600 though lift.
Pretty keen to drive this thing again!!!!

The Weber’s have aged terribly over the years sitting there, they were pretty dirty and clogged up inside, mainly from the e85 I used while it was running on the road. This stuff is fine to use with the carbs and everything but you need to make sure it’s driven regularly, like a couple of times a week. This stuff turns to sh*t if you leave it sit.

I had a look online to see if there was a way at home I could clean these, so I gave them a hot vinegar/water mix bath on the stove. It cleaned all the crap out of them. Put them back together. I actually don’t mind them looking so shiny.

Yeah, I’ll try and put it on historic rego.
I live and work in Melbourne most of the time, but it’s at my house in Nsw and I’m only there every second weekend. So I’ll just get it out when I can.
Stewart gave me an easy way to set cam timing With the 76 deg cam without getting the degree wheel out.
I just started it up then. Bit worried as the compression is super high 240psi at cranking speed, so hopefully the thing runs on 98.

Oh yeah, and I love l series. I wouldn’t do an SR conversion. That shits been done to death.
If I was going to go the pressure fed efi route, which I will eventually. It will be an Lseries. Probably a centrifugal supercharged EFI L20b with twin DCOE style throttle bodies but I really want to Mount the blower on the left above the alternator, so that will need a bit of trickery.

I've got a high compression L20B with dual Weber 45 DCOE's.

Sounds epic with a stainless steel exhaust and goes really well with plenty of power to keep pace with modern traffic.

I've always been interested in whether EFI conversions for the L Series are worth the time and $$$ to set up versus using dual Webers. I don't doubt there is more power over the rev-range with EFI, but given the L Series architecture and design I'm curious to know if the gains are that much more - all other things being equal.

Also want to sort out a decent Thermo fan setup, I have a no-name 12” electric fan, mounted infront of the radiator, because there is no room at the back of the radiator. So I was really thinking what I could do.
Then I had a lightbulb moment when I saw an old viscous clutch fan water pump of an old L20b, I noticed how small the pulley was, and if I could take the clutch of I’d have a heap of room.



Here’s the room with the current water pump, it’s about 35mm



Here’s the type of pump I had sittting around, although mine is well used. Haha
