can anybody shed some light on the interchangeability of the l series flex plates

can i use one from an l18 or l16 to go into an l20b?

or would they be different seeing as how the 910 bluebirds had two different automatic gearboxes (borg warner and jatco)

thank you

As far as I know, the L series flex plates are all the same.
Just check that the starter meshes correctly with the ring gear and the torque converter mounts are compatible.

Not all 6 cylinder plates are the same.

L4N71B auto's in late model R30's use a unique flexplate, different to the L3n71b ones.

i think the ones pictured are the L3N71B on the left and to the right is the 3N71B
also depends on year of gearbox also, depending if it has the torque converter locking mechanism or not

L 16's and L18's have a 5 bolt flywheel. L20's have the 6 bolt pattern, identical/interchangeable to the L6 cylinder crankshaft bolt pattern.

I (with help) upgraded my 1600 with borg warner 35 to a L20b.
The 6 bolt flex plate was the easy bit. There is a spacer required (which if I remember correctly sits between the crank and the flex plate) and the thickness varies by about 10mm between the 5 bolt and the 6 bolt version which we learnt after some trial and error. In the end we redrilled the original 5 bolt one which was a little messy but did the job.

Not sure if that is relevant to your situation but thought I'd throw it out there

Yes, that re-enforcing plate is very important.
The flex plates I have must be all for 6 cylinder L series and I do have those round plates as well

That's my spaniel Duke.

The 6 bolt hole flex plate on the right, was used with the 3N71B and is the same for all L20B/Z20 and Z22 and 6 cylinder L24/26/28 Z car/Maxima engines up until about '83. In N AM around '82 a locking torque converter was added to 4 cylinder engines and those flex plates were different because of the larger torque converter size.

The flex plate on the left is very likely from a Z24 motor and IS for use with the locking torque converter.

The spacers used in front and behind the flex plate was to align the torque converter to the crank center line and have to be there.

cool dog

found the info you had on 510 realm very helpful (aswell as the pic of the two plates) (apparently the same plate is also used on the ca20, aswell as mazdas produced around 1980-89, with exception of some produced '84-89 but im guessing they would be fwd)
it looks like my search may be over, but will know for sure tomorrow morning
cant wait to be in the car instead of under lol

Also the thickness between the jatco and the borgwarner spacers are different thickness.

This could very well be true. I don't have a lot of info on the BW as they are removed and thrown away for 4 or 5 speeds. There were at least 2 variants. Here the 3N71B auto was introduced in April '71 for the 1200 (sunny?) and June '71 into the 510 replacing the BW-35. All were 5 bolt hole.
