If it doesn't already - get yourself an electronic ignition off a bluebird - and replace all the metal connectors that feed power into the dizzy / coil / ignition system.

Not sure exactly what dizzy it is but it is the single points type. I hadn't really given much thought to swapping the ignition, I might have to read up on it.

Seems fairly easy, get dizzy, get coil for elec dizzy, swap coil and remove ballast resistor, just beige the two connections on the resistor with a suitable peice of we ire.

Done from the faq thread

The black and white wire on the ballast goes to the positive side of the new coil(Bosch hec715 is recommended). Did mine the other week it's not hard :) if you decide to go down this path and have any questions just ask

Better performance and fuel economy, there's no downside to this mod!

Yeah it has a slight metallic fleck and looks great in the sun.

First link no, they look like been modded for gear in end but I think you want series 2 bluebird that has a slot not a gear on the end.

I should have some more progress to post up soon. Plan for the near future:

1. Electronic Dizzy (currently tracking down the pedestal spacer I need).
2. New thicker front sway bar.
3. Install new Nolathane and Whiteline suspension bushes.
4. Wheel alignment.
5. Exhaust.
6. Stereo.

The stanza is now equipped with:

-New Electronic dizzy and coil (best thing I ever done)
-New exhaust
-Stereo (from my old car)
-Heavy duty swaybar (second best thing I ever done)
-Dynamat on floor and firewall

I will get a few more photo's up.

The next order of business is to install a wideband oxygen sensor/gauge to assist in tuning.

Some really good progress coming along here! Great to see you are getting stuck into fixing mechanicals and doing a bit of body work too.
The mods you suggested sounds like good ones. Try and get some good quality tyres, brake pads and a tyre pressure gauge if you haven't already. Do this above anything else first!
Speak to Baz about some of the mods he does to stanza's and spring rates. He and Tracy have a well sorted little beast running an SR20 from memory as you may already be aware.
I'm sure Maddat are the same with stuff they recommend.

Keep up the good work! Sounds like you are tackling this the right way.

Thanks for the kind words mate.

It has definitely been a learning process, it is amazing how much this car has taught me in the last 18 months or so. As far as tyres go I am just running some basic Nankang's ($115 each) on my little 13's. A major concern with tyres/suspension etc is that I live on a gravel road and it tends to wear stuff out quickly. I do keep an eye on pressure. The car is almost at the point I was aiming for when I started out, these are the last few things to do in the near future;

- Jet and tune the carb with the assistance of my newly installed Air/Fuel ratio gauge.
- Hook up the choke (cold starts are a bit of a pain at the moment).
- Install new suspension bushings (still haven't gotten to this yet).
- Tidy up a few things here and there.

Basically what I wanted was a simple, cheap, fun, reliable little datto that retains it's old school look and I am happy with my progress. That being said...

I have slowly developed a compulsion to take sh*t to the next level. I am still unsure as to exactly what I mean by "next level" and when this will happen but it will include a rebuilt engine (with some degree of modification) as well as some kind of brake, suspension, gearbox and diff upgrade. I aim to unleash the true potential of my mighty stanza.

This car may never be as comfy or quiet or fast as the silver blobs (modern cars) everyone else drives around but it is already more fun.

Agree. Same goes for most of the cars on here. Fun is what it's all about. I always enjoy taking the Datto for a drive. Even taking someone elses for a drive puts a smile on my face.

Today I put in Nolathane front control arm bushings and Whiteline radius rod bushings. It took a heap of play out of the steering, very keen to do the rear control arms as well.

And a bit of light reading

I am waiting for a jet kit to come so that I can re-jet my second hand weber, its pretty good for normal driving but runs rich and bogs down at wide open throttle.

Cheers
