Guys, I am wanting to remove the heater box from my car and in doing so weld up the heater holes in the firewall. But for roadworthy need heat on the window, demister. I was thinking a small 12volt electric heater that would fit under the dash.

Anybody done this? I dont want it for actually heating the car, just to pass roadworthy! Even thought about a 12volt hairdryer!!!

Cheers

what about something like this? http://www.12voltcustoms.com.au/12_volt_dimisters.shtml

I did a quick google for "demister for race cars" and got a few results

mad dat has one available. http://www.maddat.com.au/products/HDB.htm

the speedy air spares ones looks the goods, as both outlets on that and factory demister tubes look the same diameter (or close). would be easy to seal up.

does anyone know how noisey these 12v heaters would be? as noisey as a hairdryer?

That Maddat one still needs coolant lines so no go for me!! I am thinking the hairdryer type... will be noisy as hell, but it only serves one purpose.. roadworthy! Weight saving will be good too! You got to admit, the heater boxes are not the best looking things inside the 1600!

It is true that the heater boxes in Datsun 1600's look like an afterthought. If its looks that worry you, fit a console in front of the heater.

A warm car on a cold winter night is a good thing! If your heater is not working, it can be recored and a replacement tap fitted in the engine bay if you cant find a replacement for a seized original. Just a couple of suggestions.

does anyone have an opinion on these? High blower speed, hi temperature, 12V hair dryers. (93 degrees celcius so you know)

http://www.power-hunt.com/12-volt-hair-dryer.php

what if i have two? how much strain is that going to put on alternator, with both being hard wired. fark all?

also, whats the melting temp of plastic? how long would the stock heater hosing up to vent last with these puppies blasting away?

A bit off topic, but im sure a simple answer - was the heater in a 1600 a factory supplied item or was it an option?

Pretty sure it was a factory item. I say this as the 510 was sold in the US, Canada, Japan and Australia. All of which can get quite cold. Some places very cold :)

stumbled upon this hair dryer (and saw the very feminine review video on you tube)..

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-CENTRIX- ... 53ed5ebe55

So probably going to buy X2 of those, considering its quiet operation, good size motor and three heat settings. Plus an inverter..

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Pure-Sine-Wa ... 3a6d209339

There's my heater prob solved. would be nice to have some cabin heat, maybe i'll hook up some small 12v heater when im over the hoody.

There is a good reason that factory cars use the waste engine heat...

3000W with say an 85% (typical) efficient inverter = 3000 / 12 / .85 = 294 amps

I hope you are upgrading your alternator or adding a couple of extra ones!

What about a heat gun rather than a hair dryer? They produce more heat than any hair dryer.
