Hi Guys,

I'm getting my dash pad thingy (from a 1600) recovered by restor-a-dash in Sydney. They quoted me $198 plus $15 freight. Is this a good price? They said they remould it then vacuum shrink the vinyl over the mould, just like new. I talked to retrimmer and he said restor-a-dash is the way to go as my dashpad is very cracked and rooted. Has anybody used this method before? Good results?

Cheers Jeff.

I've seen a dash done by a company here in Melbourne
that uses a similar technique.
It looked just like a brand new dash - amazing.
I couldn't comment on the price, but just remember there is a bit of labor
involved in restoring a dash to its former glory & its not something
many people specialize in.

I had mine done at Dept of the car interiors at Carlton, near Hurstville
in Sydney.
It cost $120 and that was having it moulded around my cage.
That was the price in 2002 just before the nats in Sydney.

In the states you can still get new ones from the dealer.
Maybe ck there first. Could be cheaper. Was about 75-100$US a couple of years ago.

Just wondering if anyone has any great experiences with dash recovering in NZ that they can share.
I know of someone locally (Hamilton N.I) doing a suede type covering but I'm really after something a little more like the original. New genuine OEM dash tops in NZ anyone?
My '68 1600 will need one in the near future.

I can recommend Restor-a-dash. They recovered my dash top a few years back and did a top notch job!

anyone tried one of these dash 'caps' on ebay US? seem to be a bit cheaper that getting them restored. from what i can tell its just a sort of 'cap' that fits over your old pad?

oh and are the LHD and RHD dash pads the same?

I have seen the USA ones.

They are just a thin plastic mould that fits over the old dash cap and gets glued down.
They are quite shiny.

You can't get Dash caps from the states or Nissan Australia any more.
No longer available.

Yes left and right hand drive 1600 dash tops are the same

so basically you just sand down any lumps where its split and glue the cap on top? seems a bit dodgy, might just sand, bog and recover it with vinyl myself.

Just be carefull what vinyl you use.
You need to get vinyl that is UV stable, otherwise you will get what they call vinyl haze on the windscreen. Also if you use bog to fill in the cracks, make sure it is set hard properly before covering it in vinyl as it will sweat inbetween the dash and the vinyl and never set.
Oily yellow fumes come out of the vinyl and sticks to the windscreen. I personally don't like shiny dashes, so I covered the one in my Wagon with a thin sheet of foam and then covered it with rear parcell shelf carpet. Just need to vacume it clean now.
I recon I will get some black suede for the next one I do though
