Hey Guys,
Just letting you know that I just bought the BMW radiator that a lot of people use in their 1600s from Cool It in port Melbourne.
If anyone's looking for one, give them a call and ask for Wayne. He matched the $ 220.00 that a few people have paid in NSW.
Nice bloke, just tell him that Shaun with the Datsun sent you so you get the right price. When I first phoned he quoted me $ 280.

$ 220.00

I wish they made these rads with the outlets to suit FJ's, such good value for money

Wow these things have been used in a lot of Dattos since I first discovered them back in 2005....

Who has done the neatest job of mounting?

I haven't mounted mine yet, but I intend to mount it on a custom plate that will also support my intercooler. Hoping to be able to remove both together by removing 2 x bolts at the top of the radiator.
It's the filler / overflow set up that I haven't really considered yet. What did you do for that?

Originally I used a plastic Volvo expansion tank, but recently changed to a custom alloy tank instead. You can see the Volvo tank in this pic:

[ img ]

You need to use a pressurised tank as there is no cap on the radiator itself.

One tip is dont use a cap higher than 1 bar or the seals in the end tanks will be damaged.

Now for the hoses, both are made from two hoses with a joiner piece of pipe:

Top Hose: Top hose from Holden Barina SB 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, Mackay Part # CH2179
+ 90 degree bend from standard Datsun hose
Bottom Hose: Bottom hose from Holden Barina SB 1.2 Mackay Part # CH2183
+ Top hose from Toyota Landcruiser FJ45 Gates Part 05-0197

The Barina hoses have a flare on one end which handily matches the larger diameter of the radiator outlets with the narrower SR outlets.

Hey turbovan,
Mine definitely won't be the neatest compared to yours and a few other guys on this site... Prettytough competition! Thanks for the idea though!

I just went to a Volvo wreckers this morning and picked up my expansion tank and bracket. Did you custom make your bracket as it looks very different to mine. I think they are pretty similar in volvos for like 20 years so maybe it's just a later model.

Also, any ideas for sourcing a new tank in aus? So far I've found them in the US for about $25 but postage is about $75 and the wreckers here only have second hand.

Cheers

Hey mate,

My bracket is custom made. You can buy a brand new one from Volvo spares in Oz. Plenty of Volvos use that same tank, I bought a new one with new cap. Probably have the receipt here somewhere.... but it was 7 years ago.

Cheers

Hey Turbovan,

I have gone through a lot of your posts/build thread, some great inspiration for my build. Did you have any pic's of the new custom setup? would love to see how you have done it.

Cheers,

Trent

Hey turbovan,
The bracket (and the rest of course!) looks great. Much better than modifying the standard one which already looks crap to start with. I assume you punched the holes with the raised perimeter? I've got to find somewhere in Melbourne who will punch holes like that that isn't a rip off, only guy I've found with a panbrake cost way too much - let me know if you know of anywhere.
Ps I'd also be interested in checking out your custom, especially since my mates thinking about buying a tig!
Cheers

Here are a couple more shots of the volvo bracket:

No tricky tools just panbrake, holesaw, hand tools, welder etc.

Here is a current pic, excuse the grubby state of the engine bay! you can see some bit are missing, turbo gasket blew and since the turbo was off I thought I may as well put a larger one on.... and then the job escalation began :woohoo:

Turbo gasket blew so you thought you'd go for a bigger turbo? HAHahahhaa Sounds VERY familiar!
What turbo are you going for Chris?

Looks great Chris,

Are there 4 lines coming out of it? With the Volvo there are just the two...

Cheers,

Trent
