Hey guys,

Just recently bought me a datsun 1600 as a project and am looking to get it on the road. 1 of the problems I am having is that drivers side headlights and high beam are much more dim
then the passengers side.

Anyone have any idea why this might be?

Cheers
Tyler

bad earth, faulty relay, blown or bad connection at the glass fuse (they have a separate fuse for LH & RH headlights from memory)... time for a bit of "trial and error" i'd suggest.
clean up all your rusty earths and fuse ends first.

I assume that the electrics are standard?
The headlamp +12V power is split over 2 fuses.
HL [Headlamp Left] and HR [Headlamp Right] are both 10A fuses.
If the RHS lights are dim there is a high resistance connection somewhere in the +12V power circuit.
Check the HR fuse and contacts as well as the connector that is by the fuse box, for corroded, loose terminals etc.
Check the actual voltage both sides of the HR fuse and at each point all the way to the lamp connector.
12V power is applied to the headlamps all the time.
A common ground is switched at the Lighting Switch to determine what lamps are lit.
Since that ground is applied to all lamps it is more likely that the +12V power circuit is high resistance somewhere.
If you need any Wiring Schematics let me know.
I just need to know what year the car is

I thought it might have been the +12v circuit as well, but im still getting 12v at the both globes, they are all on the same earth circuit and other side is fine. Swapped over globes and everything, is doing my head in lol, and should the inner beam be sort of glowing when low beam is on?

Oh and its a 1970, I got the wiring diagram from the original manual.

To have the inner lamp glowing on Low beam indicates some feedback is going on.
That results in the lamps being in series hence the dull glow.
I would suggest that you unplug all the headlamps and check the plugs for correct voltage and a decent ground [use a volt meter].
One possibility is that the inner lamp[s] may not be stock and the body of the lamp is live.
Unless the lamp is isolated from the chassis it will ground out and glow.
So also check that on the four lamps, the terminals are isolated from ground [use an ohm meter].
The common ground from the body earth is supplied to pin 3 on the headlamp switch.

12V will always be measured at the lamp teminals, even with the headlamps turned off.
The light are switched by the eath.
As red 510 suggested, check the headlamp fuses & clean the fuse connectors in the fuses box.
It is normal for 510s to have feed back to the circuit that is not connected to earth.
99% of the time this fault is caused by the fuses & connection at the fuse box.

Yea I found it lol, fuse wasn't blown but must have lost contact on 1 end or somthing, was getting 12v on one side and 5 on the other, swapped it over and seems to be all good, now i have no indicators :S:S

the joys of 40 year old electrics :)
swap out all the fuses with new ones.... clean up all the fuse connectors... then get your multimeter out and look further

Lol indicators are working again, think the battery was just stuffed.
New battery, and they are sweet, only problem is the side repeaters aren't working, took them out and they are foooked.

Are those cheap ones off ebay any good? Just need somthing lol.
