I want to remove this glovebox lock, or at least the plastic thing off the front if it is separable? So that I can dis-assemble the glovebox door for a bit of resto work. I'm not sure if this lock is common to other Datsuns? It's in my H230, and I can't find anything covering this subject in the workshop manual.

Shitty photos but better than nothing:

There is a hole in the back but I can't figure out if it has a purpose, and the little finger thing protruding out the back above the latch is rigid.

The brass or zinc plated things you're seeing are threaded holes where I had pulled the screws out of when I took the photo.

I undid all of the screws in the door but it didn't change the problem. That black plastic thing on the front of the barrel is (at the moment) rigidly connected to the latch on the back of the door, you can loosen everything else but that will hold it all together awkwardly.

I need to seperate the front and the rear of the mechanism... I just can't figure out how it comes apart.

Ok i just went and took mine apart.. looks like the front doesnt pull off, once the circlip is off the lock pulls out

The little knobby bit to the right on my first pic in is thread, has a thread on the inside and a screw that holds on another piece of the lock

Hope this helps, as i broke my glovebox door taking this out :/

What do you mean by "has a thread on the inside"? Mine seems pretty rigid, I put the vice grips onto the finger thing on mine and it didn't wanna move. My lock doesn't have a huge circlip standing out like dog's balls like yours :(

haha
like the knobby bit is connected to a different bit, and the screw screws inside the knobby bit to hold this thing onto the door

just had a look on my lunch break, there IS a simple solution:

-so undid 'all' the screws on the inside of the glovebox lid
-this then loosened the front plastic trim which has the datsun badge on it,
-i used a 5c piece to lever and gently prise the black knob forward and IT does pop off
-the assembly will then slide out at the back and BOB is your uncle

Don't say i don't ever do anything for you

get the black knob off and BAM job done

Well I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I tried levering that black knob off today (again) and it really didn't want to budge, I was starting to bend the edges of it and I decided not to try any harder - don't want to break anything - when I worked out I could just manage to do the job that I needed without it fully removed.

So sorry for all the hassles, and at least there's a published solution on the internet now, even if I couldn't get it to work for me.

Cheers! lol

at a guess it could have been an interference fit and someone has had it off in the past and glued it back on??
