For the kids to learn to drive and do a bit of motorkhana / dirt sprints. I'd have loved to get a Datsun for the job, but couldn't find any in my price range - this one cost me two bottles of Jack Daniels. Seems to go good, gearbox is noisy, tyres are stuffed and paint is pretty ordinary. Bit of work and then it'll get its first outing at the local car club's junior development day in a few weeks. ![[ img ]](http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo69/1600dave/swift.jpg)

I empathise on the difficulty getting a cheap "club car" Dave, its a pity rear wheel drives are almost collectors items these days! You got good value - and its Japanese. Loose the hub caps to save weight and it should fly! |

Definitely hard to fond yourself a cheap rwd platform. Can't complain about the price!Oh, and +1 on the lose the hubcaps......

Yep, I didn't want to spend more than a few hundred due to the distinct possibility of the kids losing interest. With the price of this one, at least if that happens I can just thrash it in a rallysprint or two myself for a bit of fun until it dies, then take it to the scrappies and get maybe close to what I paid for it anyway. And if they do stay interested, I can always spend some time and money on it and it should be a fun little thing. The eldest daughter is 15 (L's in 12 months) and the youngest is 11 (CAMS junior licence in 12 months). I'm lucky that the local car club (MG Car Club) that I've been a member of for years actually owns a parcel of land about 20 minutes north of my place. There's a little tar hillclimb track, plenty of dirt tracks, and big open areas of cleared land that they use as car parks and for dirt motorkhanas. They also run half a dozen "Junior Development Courses", which I reckon is a great idea http://www.mgcarclub.com.au/Driver_training.htm Talking to a few mates about it, they suggested that a FWD was a better option anyway as its a fair chance that's what the kids will drive when they do get licences / cars. And the hubcaps are going, along with any other excess weight (rear seat, whats left of the carpet, the broom handle that holds the rear hatch open  ). I should check what stud pattern it is - wonder if some old Datsun 13" jellybeans will fit

i used to have a little swift like that, it was a little rocket flogged the guts outta it and didnt miss a beat, went offroad, was a daily work car, a fishing car went to a few drag meets, then the arse of the fuel tank rusted out so i traded it in so the mrs could get a new car lol i paid $300 for it when i got it and 5 years later i got $800 trade in was a pretty good deal. |

I think I'll leave it stock for now..... Just looking round a little, I found a Hayabusa-engined, RWD one on a web site. THAT would be fun. And apparently they have 4 x 114.3 stud pattern  If a +30 offset is OK on them, I could run the wheels and semi-slicks off my 1600 on the front of the Swift for motorkhanas

So how's the Hayabusa transplant going Dave? Sequential 6 speed gearbox for the learners makes for fun gearchanges... Then when they get their "P's", you can fit a turbo.... |
