this is princess, she is a 1977 120y coupe, has just over 72000 ks on the clock, and has an auto box that is just a tad clunky... she was given to me by her previous owner the day she run out of rego.. good score or wat?? at the moment im halfway thru repainting it, mostly because the roof needed it, and it had alot of orange spots comming thru.. need to find a new back trim thingy for around the lights because the old 1 was a bit rusted, and maby a new rear bumper because its got a ding in the middle.. other wise it was pretty straight when i got it. the interior was pretty good when i got it, clean ed up ok. only down sides are the carpet is a bit worn in places, one of the rear ashtrys is buggered and so is the trim around it, the drivers seat has a tear on the back of its right shoulder, and for some reason it looks like someone tore the top off the middle of the back seat.. i found a 120y wagon at the wreckers today, im pretty sure the back seat will fit and it looks good, but its black, which wouldnt matter if i can find good black front seats.. ill leave it at that for the moment.. because i got alot to add.. :D any suggestions or comments would be great.. thanks guys :)

Too bad they crushed the coupe they had at the hi-way wreckers :-( they crushed a 120Y sedan, and 3 sunny's (b310). There's a 120y sedan there too now, dunno if it was there when you looked at the wagon.

By the way, I've got the drivers side fender off that wagon if you want it. It's completely rust free except for 2 bubbles on the back which could be fixed with just a wire brush and some fish oil. You can have it for $20, it's straight as. I was going to use it on my sedan but the rear part of it is a different shape than the ones mine has. Save you some time rust repairing yours if they need it. PM me if you're interested.

yeah i already picked the crap outta the wagon and the sedan. best part i found on them was a dash mat in the sedan.. they are the only 2 datos i can find for parts and they pretty gone, at least they the right model tho.. i been thinking about gettin the 4 speed from the wagon, but the fat guy wants 250 for it, or 500 with the bare block, which i think is crazy when they porbably paid $50 for the whole car.. my coupe had little rust when i got it, mainly just a few holes in the drivers door and a lil bit on the front cover near the wippers, unfortunatly my welding is no where near as good as yours, or my paitence, so i just bogged it up.. im trying to organise to get the coup in the classifieds on here, its got the a15 looks pretty rust free and straight, should be good for alot of parts or maby to put on the road and have 2...
i am waiting for the arival of an AMR500 supercharger, not exactly sure wat im gonna do with it yet.. but it looked perfect for that empty lookin engine bay.. :D

Yeah when you're at that wreckers make sure you go to the desk when the fat guy is serving someone else (I usually wait out the back of the shop till another customer walks in with their stuff and get served by the fat guy) then get served by one of the younger guys, they tend to be a lot cheaper.

I got a set of R31 calipers, rotors, backing plates, mounting plates, axle studs, mounting plate nuts and bolts, handbrake cables and handbrake, and the flexi lines, and got served by the young fella with the long-ish hair, $75.

He walked away and had something else to do, then I went to the desk and the fat guy wanted $125, and i told him the other fella said $75. He got the s**ts and went and talked to the young fella and came back and said "righto, you got a fkn bargain though".

Is the $250 for them to pull the box out or for you to pull it out? They tend to be a lot cheaper if you pull stuff out yourself. They had a complete A14 and a smoothcase 4spd box there and they wanted $600.

As for your car and getting a manual box for it, theyre a fair bit more complicated to swap than first thought. Have a look around on here and datsun1200.com though and you should find enough info to do it properly.

I'd try pulling out the auto and get Australian Automatics in bundy to service it and tighten or replace the bands. You could also get some bigger/smaller valve gear put through it or get them to modify the ones already in it. Makes them shift and drive a bit harder.

Regarding putting a carb on the A15, I'd get a single side-draught Weber manifold and a DCOE40 Weber carb and chuck on it. You can usually pick up a carb on a manifold on ebay for around $200-$300 for a decent set. Dellorto carbs are a cnt to get bits for and when you find a place that stocks parts for them they want an arm and/or a firstborn for them.

Ask Jacobsens Engineering in bundy if they can grind your cam. I'd keep your original just in case, and just get another cam from another A15. I'm not too sure whether you can use a cam from an A12 in an A15, just make sure when you grab a cam from an A12, that it has the distributor in the right position. 1200's have the early block design A12's with the dizzy up front, late model blocks (120Y, B310 (aka Sunny)) have them in the middle.

You can get extractors from a place in south aus, I've forgotten the name of the company though.

Stanza struts and brakes arent all that fantastic. You get less suspension travel with the struts, and the brakes arent all that much better than late model 120Y discs. Does your coupe have discs? And are they PBR callipers? Go to Brakes Plus and order a new 7/8 master cylinder for a 280zx. Makes loads of difference.

The panel which goes over the wipers and cowl is removable. Just undo 6 phillips head screws and they just come off. Check out the ones on the wagon and sedan at the wreckers and if theyre any good, just unscrew one and slot it onto your coupe and screw it in. Not sure whether the coupe ones are different.

thanks for all the info mate.. the 250 is for me to pull it out, i asked if it was cheaper if i do it and he snarled "that is if u do it" i said i might just look around for a complete car then and hes like "pfft good luck".... nice customer service... i might have to go look for the r31 brakes.. it seems pretty straight forward, and sounds like a better brake upgrade than the stanza front disks, the coupe is disk brake front, tho i am unsure of the make, its a 77 model if that helps.. the coupe in the classifieds on here has the side draft webber and he wants $400 for the whole car, i rang him today but no answer, i am praying he still has it there.. the panel under the windscreen is ok.. all the rust is on the edge hidden by the rubber, i just dremeled it all out and painted it, the panel i really want is the back 1 that goes around the tail lights on the coupe, i think it worked kinda like an anode on an outboard motor because it was bad rusted but the rest of the car is fine..
i like the idea of the new master cylinder, is it hard to swap? do u know wat they sell for?
also i been looking at an electronic dizzy on ebay, do u know wat the differnce is? can i make the stock dizzy electronic with a kit?
thanks for your help.. it is much appreciated

The r31 brakes were for the rear. theyre a pain in the ass to convert, and then you have to get them engineered $$$

Go to Brakes Plus with your old master cyl and get them to order a 7/8 one to fit the same bolt pattern. Just bolt the new one straight in and hook the lines back up, bleed your lines, and you're done. New master will probably cost around $100, comapared to $1000 or something silly to get r31 brakes, mod them to fit, and get them engineered. One of the fellas on here ran a 7/8 280zx master on his 120Y sedan with turbo'd toyota engine, doing some awesome track times, the master cyl was the only modification, everything else brake-wise was as it left the factory.

Electronic dizzys. Look on ebay and there's a fella with seller id with 'mal' in it, call him up (dont message him on ebay) and he can get you an electric dizzy for $160 posted. Make sure you get him to give you one with little slack in the shaft and that the gear on the bottom isnt loose or the pin is off-centre.

Rear light panel. You thought of making a custom fibreglass one? I'd just make one out of fibreglass in the 140/160Z style:
http://datsun1200.com/modules/mediawiki ... itle=PB210 look towards the bottom for round taillight versions

deffinatly gonna get the brake booster and find out about some braided lines.. that sounds easy as..
as for the back im just gonna paint the back of the car to look like its got 1 and use black sicaflex to fill all the holes.. should come up ok, im gonna use the black sickaflex around the side windows to just to make sure they arnt leaking and help protect the rubbers, should have the first coats of paint on it on saturday so ill have more pics up soon.. the car below is kinda how i want it to look, i think its got a vinyl roof on it but im gonna paint the roof and around the lights black as well as the top of the doors and around the top half of inside the doors and underneath the weather strip above the side windows.. then the rest will be the white.. and when i get round to it the engine bay will be black and the engine bright blue.. im not sure how itll turn out but we should have a good idea by the end of the weekend :D wish me luck

got my paint this morning, ended up with 4L motorspray acrylic white, high opacity apparently?? lol $109.50... 1L black $44.95 wax and grease remover $15.95, then i got another $25 on bog and sand paper, motor spray thinners 4L $37.. then i got more sand paper at bundaberg port marina, 20 sheets for $16, it was the bargain of the day.. and i spent $12 at the op shop on old bed sheets..
next time your old man and mate says lets paint the car, itll only cost $200!! dont belive it.. i was in it for $200 before i finished the primmer.. the paint alone mite cost $200, but everything else u need and the effort involved will send u broke.. :P
should have at least all the white bits done by tommorow.. spent most of today with the bog picking on all the little divots.. hopefully the time spent will be worth it in the end.. the parts we have done a coat of paint on have come up well.. stills need a light sand with 2500 and then another coat and so on till im happy :D ill post some pics from today and then the next time you hear from me she'll be black and white :D

You gonna have it back on the road by the 20th this month? Should take it down to All Japanese Day down near Nudgee. I'm going, but my 1200 is going to be staying at home I think :-(

sounds like a good day out.. id love to have it on the road by then.. now that i dont have to spend any more on painting it (BIG YAY) ill be able to concentrate on gettin it on the road.. its all gonna come down to cash but ill see wat i can do.. i think all i need for roadworthy is tyres, because the ones on it look like they are from 1980.. and maby look at the steering, i tightened up the steering box and its a bit better but not perfect needs some new bushes or arm or something, i been wondering if the front end rebuild kits on maddat.com for the 1200s will fit the 120y that would fix all my problems and make it drive like new..

Dunno, ask them, Datsport, and Dr Datto and get the parts from whoever is cheapest. maddat is based in WA i think, so transport would be killer. I've also heard that the transport company they use is pretty poor. Datsport in SA are fairly cheap, and they send stuff to you damn quick. Dunno about Dr Datto though. I recommend Datsport though. But just go for whoever is cheapest, most likely all end up at about the same price.

Looks pretty good, should put some superlites or some other classic mags under it later on when money allows. You know any other people around here with dattos? Would love to get a club/cruise group going.
