I thought I’d throw some info up regarding my 1969 510 I’ve owned for 9 years now.
I bought the car in October 2001. I had previously owned a 1972 4 Door Sedan. I had grand plans of doing a Z18ET conversion along with a new paint job. I stripped that car down only to find a really rough body with a lot of flaws. I was gutted. The car sat as a shell under the house for nearly 5 years before I got rid of it. It donated a fair few parts to my current 510.
Looking at the old Ozdat classified I came across an ad for my current car. With a mate we went and looked at the car and it was mine. A 1969 2 Door Sedan, RHD conversion, FJ20ET, Microtech Digi 2 Pro, FMIC, 3” Exhaust, Early Comodore brakes, brown bonnet, rough paint.
I got the car home and began fiddling and doing glory laps around the block. I had no licence and it was unregisted, but being 18 meant that I was invincible. I had the car tuned, painted the bonnet with some matt-black paint (better than brown!) and installed some wheels that I took off my 4 door, 17” Speedy Mystiques.
Photos from the day it came home (bad photos I know) Oct 2001:
I managed to get the car registered, it had an A.C.T engineers certificate that verified all the mods were legit. QLD Transport were happy.
I drove (mainly thrashed!) it around for around 5 months. The R160 soon gave up and I pinched the R180 from my old 4 Door. There were plenty of running repairs in the early days. I managed to get defected for a few things and that meant I needed to take the car off the road.
We did some tidying up of a few things, I rebuilt the front end with new ball joints + bushes. Got her back on the road and kept driving.

Fast forward around 6 months I decided I had the thirst for more power. So being a young-dumb idiot I bought a T04E turbo. It had a .5 Front Cover and .86 rear housing. Quite a large turbo. A mate of a mate agreed to help me by making manifolds for it, and fabricate some stuff to fit. He turned out to be in a life crisis with some kind of drug addiction, so the whole process got blown out time wise. His work was awful and the manifold cracked countless times. I drove the car with the big-dumb-laggy setup for around 6 months before I finally cracked the shits and changed it.

Next I decided I wanted to fit something more responsive. So I went ahead and bought an S14 T28 Turbo that was new at the time. I had a local engineering mob make a T3 – T28 adapter plate as these weren’t available at the time from anyone. At this time I also changed a bunch of stuff. Turbo, radiator, dump pipe, intercooler pipework. I also rewired most of the car and installed a Haltech E6K. I had the car tuned and it was going awesomely. So responsive, it was an animal. It would single spin 1st, 2nd and parts of 3rd gear. I took it to QR with the single spinner diff and nearly killed myself when it would decide to bite both! I ran a 13.5 @ 108mph with the T28 and open centre diff.

Next thing I fiddled with was the brakes and diff. I decided the shitty brakes I had needed upgrading. I used DB425X rotors (Verada) and Toyota Hilux 4-Runner calipers. I also went to the trouble of upgrading my rear brakes to R31’s. I found a rebuild 3.9 R200 LSD on ebay and bought it, then figured out a budget CV conversion for the rear end using 280zx R200 Parts. I worked out the right combination of 280zx parts and my ghetto CV conversion was complete. Didn’t cost a lot and is still going strong.
I drove the car around in this guise for quite a while until I decided I wanted something nicer. The decision was made to do a full rebuild and overcome any dodgy stuff that was bothering me. I worked out my budget for the rebuild and went to work!
