I thought I’d throw some info up regarding my 1969 510 I’ve owned for 9 years now.

I bought the car in October 2001. I had previously owned a 1972 4 Door Sedan. I had grand plans of doing a Z18ET conversion along with a new paint job. I stripped that car down only to find a really rough body with a lot of flaws. I was gutted. The car sat as a shell under the house for nearly 5 years before I got rid of it. It donated a fair few parts to my current 510.

Looking at the old Ozdat classified I came across an ad for my current car. With a mate we went and looked at the car and it was mine. A 1969 2 Door Sedan, RHD conversion, FJ20ET, Microtech Digi 2 Pro, FMIC, 3” Exhaust, Early Comodore brakes, brown bonnet, rough paint.

I got the car home and began fiddling and doing glory laps around the block. I had no licence and it was unregisted, but being 18 meant that I was invincible. I had the car tuned, painted the bonnet with some matt-black paint (better than brown!) and installed some wheels that I took off my 4 door, 17” Speedy Mystiques.

Photos from the day it came home (bad photos I know) Oct 2001:

I managed to get the car registered, it had an A.C.T engineers certificate that verified all the mods were legit. QLD Transport were happy.

I drove (mainly thrashed!) it around for around 5 months. The R160 soon gave up and I pinched the R180 from my old 4 Door. There were plenty of running repairs in the early days. I managed to get defected for a few things and that meant I needed to take the car off the road.

We did some tidying up of a few things, I rebuilt the front end with new ball joints + bushes. Got her back on the road and kept driving.

Fast forward around 6 months I decided I had the thirst for more power. So being a young-dumb idiot I bought a T04E turbo. It had a .5 Front Cover and .86 rear housing. Quite a large turbo. A mate of a mate agreed to help me by making manifolds for it, and fabricate some stuff to fit. He turned out to be in a life crisis with some kind of drug addiction, so the whole process got blown out time wise. His work was awful and the manifold cracked countless times. I drove the car with the big-dumb-laggy setup for around 6 months before I finally cracked the shits and changed it.

Next I decided I wanted to fit something more responsive. So I went ahead and bought an S14 T28 Turbo that was new at the time. I had a local engineering mob make a T3 – T28 adapter plate as these weren’t available at the time from anyone. At this time I also changed a bunch of stuff. Turbo, radiator, dump pipe, intercooler pipework. I also rewired most of the car and installed a Haltech E6K. I had the car tuned and it was going awesomely. So responsive, it was an animal. It would single spin 1st, 2nd and parts of 3rd gear. I took it to QR with the single spinner diff and nearly killed myself when it would decide to bite both! I ran a 13.5 @ 108mph with the T28 and open centre diff.

Photos of that setup 2003:

Next thing I fiddled with was the brakes and diff. I decided the shitty brakes I had needed upgrading. I used DB425X rotors (Verada) and Toyota Hilux 4-Runner calipers. I also went to the trouble of upgrading my rear brakes to R31’s. I found a rebuild 3.9 R200 LSD on ebay and bought it, then figured out a budget CV conversion for the rear end using 280zx R200 Parts. I worked out the right combination of 280zx parts and my ghetto CV conversion was complete. Didn’t cost a lot and is still going strong.
I drove the car around in this guise for quite a while until I decided I wanted something nicer. The decision was made to do a full rebuild and overcome any dodgy stuff that was bothering me. I worked out my budget for the rebuild and went to work!

So I'm bored at work I thought I'd continue with my resto story.

Late 2004 I decided it was time to repaint the old girl and give everything a bit of a tidy up. I wanted a full respray decided it should stay yellow.

We gutted the car. Every wire, every hose, every line. Just to a rolling shell.

Here are some photos of the condition of the shell. The engine bay especially was a dog's breakfast and pretty shitty.
We found 2 spots of rust. 1 section around 1inch long under there rear window rubber on the seam, and 1 section around the size of a 5c piece in the rear quarter.

The circled holes in the engine bay are one's I wanted welded up.

A mate had just started a respray business and took me on as one of his first customers. Here are some progress photos of the work. The engine bay, door jams + gutters were sand blasted.

and painted

While it was away being painted I bought some goodies from around the traps. New bars, new lights, and some other goodies.

It made it home and for the next 6-12mths I slowly put it all back together.

I drove the car around like that for a little while and decided I wanted to change the wheels.

I did alot of driving, and really thrashed the old FJ20/T28 combination. One night it just started mis-firing and that was the death of the FJ20.

Over the next 12months I had the engine rebuilt.

- Wiseco .40Thou over Forgies
- New Chains, new guides.
- Reco Cylinder head
- ARP Head Studs / Cometic MLS gasket.

Nothing too wild, enough for a 3-350 rwhp street motor. I decided the turbo needed to be changed, so I had Kyle from 6Boost Jig up a new manifold to suit the new turbo. A Garrett GT2876R .64 Exhaust (400hp version). I wanted repsonse and knew that top end would be slightly sacrificed.

After fitting the larger turbo I installed 800cc Sard Injectors and changed the map myself (with the assitance of a PLX wideband sensor). Did a few thousand kms over the last few years. I bought some Enkei 2 Piece wheels 16x7 16x8. Painted up the centres and polished the rims.

I tidy'd up the interior as well. Some Evo 4/5 Recaros and LOTS of gauges. I am running a SSS Dash fitted with Autometer ES series gauges. And a Defi Din Trio. Lets just say I'm WELL informed when driving.

And thats how the car looks today.

Whats next?

-I need to sort the interior out.
- Brake Upgrade All-Round (R32 GTR)
- Suspension Upgrade (front and rear coilovers)
- 5 Stud Conversion + Fit my Work Meister S2's. (17x7+17x8)
- Interior Retrim
- New ECU (the old E6K is getting on a little)
- ID1000 Injectors
- New fuel tank + pump Setup
- Retune on E85 + 20PSI for a laugh...

In the meantime I'm building this :

VQ30DET + GT35R + N2O + 910 = skids

nice to see a write-up on this beast, I've seen bits and pieces over the years. New project is a fair animal too!

Great write up bloke you should be real proud of your ride.
Just wondering what you got out of the gt2876 power wise.

I don't have a final power figure just yet. When I first had it tuned, I was using a chopped up Z18ET wastegate actuator (the bracket fit was better than the supplied actuator)...

anyways, it was blowing open on anything more than 8/9PSI. She made 250hp at 4600RPM on around 9psi... Any more revs and any more boost it would just blow open and give me 5psi, that has been fixed and it's holding 20psi now.

I'm predicting around 3-350 rwhp... a tickle more on E85.

I keep seeing this car in photos in Fast Fours. Usually giving the v8's hell at powercruise? (or was it the 'nats? I can't remember)

Yep, real nice.

Appreciate it was a while ago, but where did you get your (new) bumper bars?
