STI to Datsun Half shaft adaptors

These are desinged to fit the 2004 through 2009 CLSD WRX STi diffs and sholud also fit the 2007 and 2008 Torsen WRX STi diffs.

here is a forum thread about them. Which pretty much swayed me to buy a set.

The conversion is very easy.

Parts you will need are
Subaru WRX STI R180 diif. Needs to be from 2004 - 2009. Approx $400-$1000 depending on condition and LSD type.
Datsun R180 or R160 pinion flange (tail shafts bolts to this.)
Beta Motor Sports adaptors $500 Link above
Datsun 1600 half shafts (the type that bolt in both ends) Free
RUJ-2028 Uni Joints (optional) $18.35 ex gst from Bearing wholesales Bayswater.

Work Involved.
Car up on stands
Unbolt half shafts remove them from the car
Unbolt tail shaft. Don't remove unless you want gear oil to pool on the shed floor.
Rip old single spiner or locker diff out and smile as you wave good bye to it.
Grab the STI diff. Use a punch and punch mark the pinion nut and thread as to its position.
Get a good impact gun and remove the pinion nut. The flange maybe stuck fairly tight. Don't smack the sh*t out of it with a hammer as you will change the pinion depth and when you do up the nut again the crush tube will crush more which means pull diff to bits time. Use a harmonic balancer puller and your diff will last a long time.
Change the pinion seal. You can get this form the bearing shop as well.
Slide on the datsun flange
Do the pinion nut up to line up with your punch mark.
Chuck the diff in your Datto. Remember to put the spacers back in.
Install the Beta Motorsport adapters. ( you will need to re use the studs from the old 1600 output flanges)
Bolt up half shafts and tail shaft. (chnge the uni's out for new items. I like the Toyo uni's the best)
Fill the diff with correct oil. Needs to be a LSD type for clutch diffs Penrite make a good oil.
Drop the car back down.

Crack a JD (Job done) & coke.
Clean up the shed put your tools away and sell the old R180 to a 200B owner

If you have had the diff re set or the centre is new run it in for a few hundred k's change the oil and then enter a burn out comp. :D

So bolt in wrx diff, install these half shafts, bolt on factory arms, and go limiter bash?

wrx diff wont bolt in, need to change input flange of rear flange on tailshaft. But generally yes.
My plan is Datsun housing, CW/P, input flange, Subaru LSD and beta output shafts. Yet to see if the kaaz will physically fit the datsun housing.

The diff also needs to be a R180 STi diff. :D

can someone do a detailed write up when they complete this?

there is so much info about diffs, but no step by step easy way to do it. this seems a pretty easy way?

I just need a diff for my 16, and only have 1500ish budget.

Hi Guys, Late late a while ago I stumbled across this site. I have contacted the company and have ordered a pair. John seems to think they will be able to cop plenty of power with out breaking. Will see what happens :D

Hey brad, i looked into these when i went down the sti 180 path. John's stubs look the biz and there has been alot of good feedback. In the end it was the cost that put me off. No doubt, they are worth every bit, but in the end you are still stuck with the unis unless you fork out even more cash for the cv kit. I ended up putting my cash towards getting custom length shafts and an adaptor made up to fit the sti cvs. sti cv conversion cost me about 800 pulling a few favours. Something to think about.

Well adaptors are on the way and a fresh STI R180 2 way LSD diff on the way. Total cost so far is $950. I'm not fussed with using uni's. I have never busted one and plenty of Datsun’s with good power have and still run uni's. I'm not into drag racing which would probably cause the most stress to a uni joint. The main reason behind going with the STI R180 is there are a bunch of different centre options available. Kaaz, Cussco, Quaife and STi all have good offerings when/if I need them.

Some pics of the new diff :D

950, dam good price.

Also the guys running a clutch pack (if any one is?) are you going to run a fluid cooler+pump on them at all?

I did think about that fella but, as I only do a few club sprints here and there I'm not to worried about it. Some expensive LSD syth oil should be fine.

I run a clutch-type R160, no external cooling and have had no dramas in the 3 years or so its been in the car (plus another 15 - 20 years in other cars before I got it).

I've done quite a few track events with it, including Bathurst which involved some longer-than-usual stints behind the wheel. I've drained and refilled it twice since its been in the car and the old oil looked as clean as the day it went in both times.

Based on my experience, I'd agree with Brad - unless you are doing pretty serious track work, there's no need.

What ratio is your R180 ? What other ratios do they come in ?

The diff that's coming is a 3.9. I'd like a 4.11 but, they don't extist. STI ratios from what I have researched are genrally 3.9 or 4.44. There are a few 3.54 kicking around too. I will be mucking around with the current datsun 4.11 diff I have here to see how easy it would be to use the gears from that. It is from a S12 and has the large K stamp on top of it so I'm hoping it works out well. If not I'll use the STI guts and gears.

I'll be using a kaaz clutch LSD, no cooler but Perrin high capacity finned diff cover.

MYDATO have you looked into studs from Nissan for the output shafts? Or are you going to re-use the old ones?

I'll just re use the old ones mate.
