ok have saved up a bit more money to spend on the project.. a few questions asked. whats the best way to fix a stripped out bolt hole in the head..the one that holds my rocker cover on the guy who had it before me had pput a big roofing screw in it and wrecked all the thread into the head..now obviously i need to re tap it but its too small to go 6mm or the imperial equivalent and 8 mm the next size up is quite large..just hoping that i dont run the risk of cutting into a water galley or anything when i do this..anyone know any other alternatives? cheers josh

hey guys saved a bit more money to spend on my project and have a few questions..first of all i want to get the rocker cover back on so i can get a bit of oil in the engine..what is the best way to go about re-doing a bolt hole? the old owner had put a big roof screw in one of the rocker cover holes and has stripped out the thread..it is a 6mm hole and the next size up is 8 mm and wondering if that is too big to tap? not sure about water galleys etc..i cant use the imperial equivalent (5/16?) as the hole is too stripped..any one got any other ideas on how i would go about doing this? cheers

You could drill it out a little and heli-coil it. I haven't used one personally, but someone heli-coiled the SP hole/thread in the head of one of my motorbikes, I reckon it's stronger than anything you could ever tap into it, and using a heli-coil, you can regain the original threaded hole size.

(I would use threadlocker on it just to be sure)

Or the el-cheapo way you could do it is drill it out, tap it, centrepunch in the end of the right sized bolt for the new thread, drill into it, tap it the same as the original threaded hole, cut the end of the bolt off, put a bolt the size of the thread in the middle of the big bolt, lock the bolt to the centre threaded big bolt with a locknut, put some heavy duty Loctite thread locker on the threads of the bigger bolt with the small threaded bolt in the middle (DONT PUT THREADLOCK ON THE SMALL BOLT), screw it into the hole in your cylinder head using the locknutted bolt. Leave it for 24hrs and then undo the locknut and undo the small bolt. Ta-daaa!!!!

have a question about what is what with the radiator outlet and where a few pipes go..pics will explain better..

[ img ]

are hoses meant to run like this? and at the back of the head which would sit closest to the firewall is this meant for a heater outlet? if so where would the left outlet on the radiator outlet then go?

Also the pipe coming out of the block in the below pic just under the manifold is this just an emissions thing like blow by from memory it was connected into the back of the original manifold?

and a few other pics while im at it

13 x 8's

my attempt at the rocker cover

Those mag's should look fkn sweet with a good polish with Autosol Metal polish (about $10 a tube, lasts ages).

Had a similar set on my Valiant, if only those Mothers Power Ball polishing head things existed back then....wouldve been mirrorific!

Can't even leave the project in the shed and do stuff to it as it becomes affordable?

Polishing balls?

I used the finest wet and dry sandpaper I could get, wet sanded my jellies, then used some autosol, a toothbrush and a cheap rag. Came up great, and I think i spent under $20.

As for the tyres, you should be able to get 205's from the wreckers. I've seen wider than that in 14 inch as well though.

There's no point going to a wider rim if you're going to stick the same profile tyres on it. If anything, it'll give you less grip.

yeh gave up on the sanding idea..don't know if they are even going to go on. only reason they would go on is because they would look cool..no performance benefits intended.
