Thats a common mistake, there are two bolts that hold on the thermostat housing to the block and long one and a short one. put them in the wrong way around and that is what happens. Lucky that the chain didn't snap...

Yeah very lucky hey.

Dont know what happened but it wasnt simply getting the long and short ones the wrong way around, as the short one doesnt actually fit on the long side. Must have picked up a longer bolt perhaps from the timing cover... Have spaced it out with about 4 washers for now...

That would be about the best solution i could think of... To get you to the bolt shop and buy the actual proper length bolt :)

Also fitted an oil pressure guage, and a new banjo fitting on the first carb which got rid of the nasty bend in the fuel line...

Just come up the old freeway after a wheel alignment... Thats better.
Much happier now. Wasnt very impressed when i first got it going but its now going like i expected it to... sits very flat in the corners and hangs on heaps... enough poke to hang the tail plenty in second too :D
Looking forward to getting it dyno'd. Anybody ever used classic tune in Hackam? http://www.classicperformance.com.au/

Ive been advised to go there...

Ok so i fitted that oil cooler and it works great, when giving it more of a workout it holds the temp right in place and never goes above the mark.

After the first few runs i had to top the oil up a bit as it filled up the lines etc, and now the oil level is sweet. However;

On cold start up the engine is fine, but if its hot and has been stopped for a few mins, (ie. filling up at the servo) and i start it the engine makes a terrible nocking noise for a few seconds and the oil pressure reads about nothing. After 5 seconds or so the oil pressure picks right up again and the noise stops.

??????? Is the cooler somehow starving the motor? Its a thermostatic cooler so only opens up when it reaches a certain temp...
I read somewhere to set it up with the inlet at the bottom of the cooler so that the oil takes longer to pass up through the cooler and hence has time to cool, which is how its set up now. Could this be the problem?

While driving the oil pressure always behaves itself... Any ideas?

So not alots ben happening on the car, im going to piss of the oil cooler, was more trouble than its worth... So if anyone wants one...

Dont think ive done much to the car, just been enjoying driving it.

Getting my bumpers chromed for christmas, ended up going to Ace Metal Finishers in Thebarton on a friends reccomendation. He says it will be about $500 for the two which is the best quote ive had. Hopefully hecan keep it to that. Should have them back in about 3 weeks.

Lots of niggly little things to sort out as always but shes going pretty well. Its strange after all the whinging and complaining that it was annoying while i was building the car, im bored now and want to start another project(ae86?)... seems mental to me, but dunno how to break it to my mother

Happy new year guys, hope santa brought lots of Datsun goodies for you.

The best way? Let her know as it arrives in the driveway.

Re-chromed bumpers will be good. Lots of people go on about how it makes the bumpers slightly longer and then 'doesn't look right'. I think that this would be better than rusty bent bumpers personally. The price sounds good, best quote I ever had was about $250 for a 200B bumper. Get some pictures up once you have them back.

Any decisions on front struts and wheels yet? Or are you just ignoring it for now and enjoying the ride?

So I got off my arse and did some stuff to the drivers seat, ended removing some silly brackets which allowed the seat position to be adjusted, and ground off the actual lever and its brackets... end result is it dropped the seat down about two inches. I had to put some bolts through the rails to stop them sliding, so the seats not adjustable, but pretty sure everyone who drives a 1600 would have the seat fully back anyway... theres not much room.
Much happier now and its mounted much more solidly...

Installed my head unit the other day, which is nice but each time i turn off the battery isolater i lose my preset radio stations... ah well i can deal with that. Cars too loud to listen to music anyway

And i bought these today off a mate of mine 8) :P

15x8 +13 offset :) will fit nicely under the rear.

As you can probably see one of them needs rolling and they could both do with a really good polish, and one has some gutter rash which ill get fixed. Not best condish but should scrub up alright.

Now, struts.
Has anyone had experience with both Datsport coilovers and Maddat coilovers?
Im thinking i might try and trade/ sell mine and buy some Maddat ones so as to fit my 7" rims on the front.

Do you think there will be any difference in Handling between the R31 strut and stanza? The other issue with my Datsport ones is theyre adjusted fully down and theres about 2" of travel before the bumpstops. And i want the car lower still.

Chris

Good work on the wheels, finding 8" wide wheels can't be a bit difficult in positive offset so you've done well there. Get them re-rolled and polished and they will really suit the car. Tyres too maybe.

With regards to your strut question, as far as I know Stanza struts don't fit 1600s, did you mean 200B/240K? If you can't get the car low enough for your liking then maybe you would be better off getting some 200B or 240K struts and shortening them, buying a coilover kit separately (Datsport or other) and then getting those welded to your new struts. The wheels should fit inside your guards then plus you can have the car sit lower. A few guys I know with Datsuns around here have done that, it can be done relatively cheaply depending on how much you spend on coilovers. Only thing is your braking capabilities may be reduced somewhat, it won't be too bad though.
