My old car was unfortunately involved in a bit of a shunt, that was the end of that :(

On the up side, recieved insurance and purchased myself this shell off Benox on here, and now ive stripped the old car and started installing the bits n pieces into the new beast 8)

Shell came with:
Maddat Halfcage
Newish carpet
New hoodlining
Central locking (no outside door locks)
Maddat FJ kit

Done:
Fit Noltec bushes throughout rear end and bolt in
Exchange reversed xmember for original
New ball joint boots everywhere
Fit brand new brake and clutch masters
Fit pedal box assy
Fit dash from old car

To do:
R31 coilovers, probably datsport brakes
Either superlites or some proper Japanese wheels (must fill the guards!)
Carpet boot
Parcel Shelf
Harnesses (purely because the mounts are there)
Rear disc conversion
R180 LSD at some point

Motor:
L18
Standard bottom end
Worked Head
Will post details later
Will get the car all running and enjoy it for a while then work the bottom end later

Doing:

Just beginning the sand back, as the car has been scratched pretty daym badly :( I've got all the materials, just need to sort out an air compressor with a sander and get under way. Respray will be the same colour so i dont have to do the door jams and remove rubbers etc etc.

Basically its just gonna be a really neat 1600 with a hot L series, hide all the wiring and make it pretty, use it as a weekend hack, track days etc. Something to put a smile on my face :P

Its so similar to my car just the paint is more redish and mine is more orange.

Good Luck with it, and keep us updated :D

Cheers fellas, yeah thats the idea, neat L powered 1600... old school cool with rims to match

Datsun 16 Hundred, i'm basically going to spend as much as i can on this motor
Whats your name? hate typing out forum nicknames each time. We can compete for horsepower once the cars are up and running :giggle:

Will keep it updated once the rub back begins... off to start masking up now.

Hey, i take it your names Chris :)

Mines Stephen (its on my signature :P)

Definatly have to compete for horsies :D
I got a L20 and you got the L18 would be good to see who can get the most, what carbs you got 40mm or 45mm webs ? i only got 40mm's.. unsure of how much head work im gonna do atm will be port and polish for sure but thats probably all for now and a 72 or 74deg cam exhaust..hoping for 150-160hp at the motor and a reasonable amount of torque :D

Hey mate love the L series engines
I have built a 1600 of my own as a race car and has 6 point cage in it and is powered By a L18 with sideies and a bit of work done to the head and bottom end. What exactly have you done to your head, what is the head off etc as i want to rebuild mine and am looking for options on what others have done.I have just finished putting a R180lsd in my car tonight cant wait to drive it tomorrow.

Cheers, Stephen  shoulda checkd signature i knew that haha.
Yeah im running 45's. Chokes are like 30mm at the moment though, as they were on the stock motor, so when i get them cleaned up/rebuilt ill have to get bigger chokes me thinks, as well as the necesary jets. Will be interesting to see the comparison to the 2L!

Hspwr, cheers mate, the head is a V91 i think standard L18 head? This is whats been done:

Crow cam .4633 lift (what deg is that? i just got what was recommended)
New Valve guides
Valve springs
valve spring shims
Mild porting, going for higher air speeds rather than volume
Face inlet manifold
Match port inlet manifold and extractors
Helicoiled
The inlet manifold had been flared too much so it had to be welded up and ported again
Pressure tested
All of course acid dipped

I didnt have the biggest cam installed as it is a street car after all, so once its al in the car and running sweet, and i get bored of it :giggle: I'll pull it out and rebore, flattop pistons balance everything. Basically the equivalent of whats been done to the head, to the bottom end.

I do however have a monster cam laying around that would require an 11:1 comp ratio and higher octane fuel to run properly... so maybe if i lose my mind someday i can build up a 'serious' motor

hspwr good luck with the r180, i want

Cheers

My 40mm carbs are running 36mm venturis or chokes :P

But your head is a closed chamber so it would be either a A87 or a W53 number is on the spark plug side of the head. U67 and V91 are open chamber 2L heads.

Can't quite tell from the lift but, but its only a smallish cam..whats the duration and inlet and exhaust open and closing ??

When i did my bottom end recently, 86.5mm flattops, Fully balanced, ARP mains and rod bolts (for peace of mind :) ) and i got fussy and micro polished or linished the crank to get all the fine lines and other imperfections off the journals and nice and shiny and smooth for less friction i spose :? haha. and with a closed chamber 40-41 ish cc head with flatops makes like 11:1 but im putting thicker head gasket on to lower comp to 10.2:1 to stop pinging and to save on fuel costs :? even tho ill just end up useing premium anyway.

haha hope that gives you some insight, also with flat tops you have to double check piston to valves clearance, which means no cams with massive amounts of lift.

Cheers,
Stephen.

The head says nissan V912 on it :? So if its a 2l head ive got sh*t all compression then...?
Maybe do flattops sooner than later. Haha. I think it should be A87, as that whats stamped on the block...

The duration is 280
Inlet opens 33
Closes 67
Exhaust opens 69
closes 31

All these numbers mean nothing to me :?

The lift on my big cam is .1331 :!: big?

A lot bigger than the one installed at the moment anyhow

TRying to find a compressor and orbital sander to get underway with the sanding... doesnt help that its raining 24/7 here either.

Cheers

Nah man, your head is definatly a closed chamber (high compression head). V912 was of the SSS motor or something.. :?

thats a nice sized cam for the street :P

.1331 that doesnt sounds right :? to me anyway

Could the 1331 be 13.31mm lift..??

They usually lift around 1/2 an inch.

Now, as I remember my cam work 30years ago..

The other figures are when your valves open and close, so inlet opens 33degrees before top dead centre and stays open until 67deg after bottom dead centre. So your duration is 33+180+67=280deg , as you said.

The exhaust opens 69deg BBDC and closes 31deg after TDC, also 280deg duration. So at TDC both valves are open with 64deg overlap.

The longer the valves are open & the more overlap, the "hotter" a cam is and the bigger the pain in the arse it is to drive in traffic!

My rally cam is 50 to 65, so the duration is 295, but it depends greatly on the cam timing & the tappet gap when you measure them.

Thanks heaps for that, i get it now :)

Read the cam profile wrong, was reading the 'runout'?

From what i can gather looking at it all the duration on the big cam is either 356.5 or 367.9.

Anyway i wont be running it on the street i think, could see how much bigger it was just by looking at the two.

Have sanded back the scratches in the engine bay today, keen to get the car painted already so i can start puttin it together!

The way i see it, any cam over 320 duration is a crazy track cam / drag cam.

i wouldn't mind about the 298 300 make on the street
