I had a sss reverse 5 speed in my old 1600, took 5 years of complete punishment before breaking, so they are strong enough. |

I've got a Stanza SSS 5 speed in my 1600, behind a mild L18. Its taken some punishment as a rally car before I got it, I thrashed it round the street for quite a few years, and now its doing track day duties. Never had a problem, still shifts really nicely. |

Well thats about aslong as i plan to use the box for.. and it should last longer if its been fully rebuilt but for the price its gona cos to rebuild my SSS i could probably get Nick's R30 posted up..  decisions decisions..

Im considering it .. but it would have to be after christmas.. have you still got the box ?postage shouldn't be too bad if you can strap it to a pallet and put it on a truck .Btw, i just went an picked up my early  christmas presents off my parents .. 2 new Autotechnica Bucket Seats . Thanks for that Al. But im still keen on Nick's box ..little update, Finally my new 72deg Wade 487 cam turned up along with the SWM HD Springs.. Looks the goods. valves springs are nice and stiff.. Just got to solve the old lash pad issue.. get some new or re-ground rockers and the head should be complete. Still trying to figure out how much and what kind of head work i want to get done. its a W53 closed chamber with big valves. deshrouded around the valves. im thinking just match port to the manifold and leave it at that. So far; 72deg Wade Cam W53 Match port'd, big valves. Twin 40mm's L20B over bore 060" thou Flattop Pistons 10.5:1 Comp. Extractors 2" or 2ΒΌ Exhaust with hotdog and dump tip. probably other things i can't remember atm. Cheers, |

Flattop Pistons
So with the W53 head and the flat-top pistons, that will give you 10.5:1 compression? I've been told that's about the highest compression you'd want on a street motor. As it happens I'll be using that same combination in my L20B, by the looks of things 10.5:1 Comp.
But im still keen on Nick's box

You have to watch the compression ratio when using flattops and a closed chamber head in a l20b. Mine has 86mm flat tops standard 40.5cc a87 head .2 off block and head The compression ratio is about 11.5 how did you get yours down to 10.5:1 stephen mill the pistons? considering how old datsun engines are they have probably been rebuilt before and the head and block skimmed. This can raise the compression ratio even more. Suddenly you might have 12:1 + best thing to do is cc the head and cc the bore with the piston at tdc and calculate it out |

I was considering using Bluebird pistons, because I want to drive mine daily and not have it hate anything other than race fuel. |

when i rebuilt my dads range rover motor, we got new high comp pistons for it and had to get new sleeves for it, in the end the compression ratio is above 10.5:1, runs dual fuel, bit better than when it was 8.5:1  saldy 98 is always needed now, it was supposed to be around high nines, but due to milled heads and decked block it was higher
