Is it possible to use / adapt a factory tacho out of a 240Z or 260Z to enable it to be used in a 1600 which still runs an L18 and stock ignition ?

Dave,

Don't know, but I know that the tacho I'm running in my car is specifically for 4 cylinder.

Yeah, a lot of aftermarket tacho's that I've seen have a switch so you can use them with 4,6 or 8 cylinder motors. Not sure how this works, or what the switch changes.

So I guess with the 240z/260z etc, you'd have to make a few changes inside the tacho for it to work on a 4 cylinder.
I personally (without looking at it) think that it would be a hard job.

i remember reading somewhere it's the resistor behind your dash facia that interprets the rpm as a movement on the needle, with that said if you can get the elements from a 4cyl tacho and set them in, in place of what is already there for your 6cyl tacho it should work also provided that your car already had one and has the wiring harness going into the back of the dash that has the tacho wire on it

EDIT: otherwise the 6cyl will under read if you leave it in ie 2500 rpm on a 4cyl motor = 10000 pulses through your signal wire. 10000 pulses on your signal wire with a tacho thinking it has come from 6cyl = 1667 displayed on your tacho. can be deadly if you go to change on redline according to the tacho
