I do tend to get carried away with things. The SSS was only supposed to be a "practice" project to perfect my technique for the "REAL" project - a 1600.

The more I do on the SSS though, the more I'm liking the lines of the coupe. I know its sacrilege, but I'd even go so far as to say its a more attractive looking car than a 1600
I'd also agree with that !!! 8) 8)

I only decided to restore a 1600 due to the NOS all drying up.

180B SSS along with the 240/260Z are my favourite cars for exterior styling. Both with Fender Mirrors of course.....

I love the look of the older 180's. Starting to like them more than 16's myself. Debating with myself whether to pick up a rusty 73 SSS too. Its cheap but a 2.5 hr drive from hojme, and it don't go, needs a full resto. What are they worth?

They are cheaper to buy than a 1600 in equivalent condition.

I've found they are generally cheaper / easier to get parts for as well - new old stock stuff seems to go for way less than 1600 stuff would.

The downside is that they also fetch less when done up, so if you're thinking of selling it anytime soon you'll probably lose more than you would if you do up a 1600.

Personally, I reckon no more than $1000 for a non-runner, even less if it has rust issues.

Yep, I've spent 12 months just paint-stripping and fixing rust in mine

The car I learnt to drive in (Dad's 200B) started to rust 18 months or so after he picked it up brand new from the showroom floor. And it was garaged all its life .......

Dude, come to Canberra... there's car's here that never rust. Heck, there are even Alfa's and Fiats here that are rust-free...

Well, the latest poking and prodding tonight revealed what I always knew was going to be there. I've been putting off stripping this bit cause I knew it would be rusty, just didn't think it would be THAT rusty

It appears that someone has "repaired" this area by bashing it in and using bog to glue a piece of sheetmetal over the hole.

Add another layer of bog, and its "fixed" :?

This area will be next weekend's project, I'll post pics of the repair once its done.

Dave ...

That's pretty standard rust in that area for a 180B SSS.
All 4 that I have owned have had some level of rust there, and like you have just proven "Just cause there looks like little rust on top means...underneath is catus"

Thats a lot of metal that has to be replaced and it's a structural part of the shell.
I don't envy your task ahead mate... not one bit.

But from the progress you have made so far, you'll have no dramas sorting this out.

Keep up the good work Dave. 8)

Luckily the piece at the back isn't rusted, and its all pretty much straight metal - no fancy rounded sections to make. Only tricky bit is the piece at the end of the sill, about where the end of my index finger is in the last shot.

I'll have to form the lip for the wheel arch in this piece - probably have to make it up out of two or three smaller sections.

Its pretty obvious why they rust in this area - there's three layers of sheetmetal so water leaks in round the quarter window, then just sits here and causes rust.

Progress :?: :?: :?: :?:

Pretty much cut back to good metal, and the first repair done to fix a few small bits of rust in the inner section.

More pics as I progress. I think (well, I hope  ) that this will be the worst part of the bodywork I have to fix.

Some real progress today.

This was the hardest bit to form, as its quite a complex shape. I also had nothing to work to but a few lines on bits of cardboard that I took before I ripped the rust out. I'm fairly good at welding but not that good at forming sheetmetal to shape, so this was made up of 6 - 8 small sections welded together.

Now that this is in, I've got a reference to work to for the next bits, and they are fairly straight, so it should prgress quicker now.

File comment: This section was formed from a single bit of sheetmetal, hammered to shape onto a wooden template. The other side of the template will be used to do the same on the opposite side of the car.

Getting there.

Main section of the sill formed and tacked in place. All inner sections of the sill have been repaired. I would have finished this off tonight, but I ran out of oxygen :?
